Hello. I am fairly new to this website, so excuse me for any mistakes. I am a current High school student who aspires to go to MIT or Stanford and complete a double major in EECS and Mech.E. Any one currently achieving this or anyone have an comments or suggestions? Any feedback would be nice.
It’s harder at Stanford than many other places. You have to meet all the requirements for each degree and only courses that meet requirements in the School of Engineering can be double counted.
However, Stanford is one of the few top schools where, if you have the money, you can stay longer than 4 years to complete your major(s). (D is in her 5th year - thanks to scholarships - because she changed her major after two years and is also getting a minor in a related field.) This is not the case at a number of Ivies where you get 4 years and then you are out.
Double majors are rarely a good idea. They take an extra year at least (more in engineering) and they don’t really improve your job prospects. Pick either EE or ME and apply for that major. You will decide after a year or so what your best direction might be.
The thing is I do not want a double major fof better job opportunities but I want to do it to get the education and learn to create innovative products.
Then it is not so much taking a lot of courses and getting two degrees that will help. You need to get involved in co-curricular activities, like an entrepreneurship club or robotics team. You will learn these other things by doing projects. Remember college is not vocational training but learning how to learn. After you graduate you need to be prepared to learn new things on your own for the rest of your life.
For what it’s worth, I’m an EE student currently doing undergrad research in an ME lab at my school. I was torn between the two majors, taking courses such as statics, mechanics of materials, intro to circuits, and computer programming before deciding on EE.
A double major crossed my mind but once I got to research, senior electives and projects, internships, etc. I realized that they were much more interesting and worthwhile than core engineering coursework and convinced me to just move onto graduate school and pick up any ME concepts at my convenience.
I might end up achieving a double major in these subjects as I found that they have a lot of similar classes and can substitute stone claws in for electives. Does that sound like a good idea?
