I am definitely gonna double major in college but i am interested in 3 Majors
Economics, Finance, and International Business
My goal in life is to be a hedge fund manager. I have traded stocks and stock derivatives for 4 years now (Real Money) and want to continue my learning experience with something that will supplement me on my venture to wall street.
Reasons On Why these 3 Majors
Economics- Will give me an understanding of the market as a whole which has a direct effect on individual stocks. It will also give me a foundation similar that to any Money Manager today.
Finance- Specifically Stocks, Futures, Options, Forex and ETFs have always been something that i can put my all into. So Majoring in Finance will further my knowledge in investments and Trading.
International Business - This will provide me with the knowledge on the world market which has an effect on our economy. Also this would help me in International Investments.
What do you guys think would be the best combo for someone who would like to be a hedge fund manager?
I think you may unrealistic expectations for what is actually taught in each of those majors, but that’s OK, you will be able to make a better informed decision once in school and taking classes.
At most schools Finance majors will be required to take other business classes, like Econ and Intl. Bus… They also will be able to take additional electives that will give them a deeper dive into other areas of interest. A few extra classes and some outside reading (like the WSJ, FT, etc) may get you the knowledge you need.
I do not know what it takes to get hired as a hedge fund manager, but I think a finance degree plus a masters (MBA/MS Finance) would be better preparation than a triple major.
With your life goals already up and running, I think the best to boost it up is taking up International Business to better broaden your scope on the industry you wish to pursue. Then maybe after taking up your double major you could try and take an internship to some other countries’ major businesses
Talk to career services at your college and see 1) if they place graduates as hedge fund managers and 2) if so, what their background/major is. Offhand, I’d say that these jobs are hard to get and that finance may be the best option. I don’t know if a double or triple major will make any kind of difference in your job prospects.
Finance is likely the best major for a hedge fund manager. As others have said you will get some of those other classes. But if you really want to put some focus on those areas, consider double minoring in them. Or any combo of 1 major and the other 2 minors if that suits your fancy.
