I plan to major in either bio, chem, or pre-med and I understand that all are challenging and high in credit hours but I do plan to go to med school and I would like to think that a double major is more appealing because of the challenge they took on. Since it is all a big competition. Can anyone give me advice on double majoring with one of the majors listed above? Also, would I receive both degrees or just the recognition of having that extra major?
You’d be wrong - doing a double major isn’t any more impressive to medical schools than having a single major. Medical schools (and employers) aren’t really interested in measuring the “challenge” you impose on yourself by doing two majors; they’re more interested in whether you have the preparation necessary to enter the school (or job) you are going to do. With that said, you should use the additional time to volunteer or shadow doctors or participate in other activities that are related to studying medicine.
Med schools want you to pick a major, or a double major, or a major/minor, or whatever for you, not for them. As to academics med school schools require a degree, premed reqs and competitive GPAs/MCAT. In addition med schools look for applicants with characteristics that they believe MDs should have (eg altruism, compassion, communication skills, research, fit with mission statement, etc) as shown in your ECs, LORs, PS, and if offered, in your interview. Yes people with double majors do get accepted with above. Although rigor is not of zero importance, don’t expect your decision to double major will cause med schools to overlook low GPAs. In addition to demands of double major, where do you expect to find time for ECs, or have a college life, or whatever else.
