Hi!
I’m going to apply for Biopsychology, Cognitive Science, and Neuroscience and Musical Theatre. Is it possible to get into one but not into the other? If no, is it possible to get into one and later on declare a second major?
@Company What school offers the Musical Theatre Major? Cause for LSA the closest one I could find was Music.
In regards to your question, you don’t really “apply” for a major. You declare for it based upon a variety of factors that varies by major (i.e. some require you to have all the pre-req classes completed and others allow you to declare whenever). Then you must obtain the necessary amount of credits (aka pass) to complete the major and graduate.
If you are referring to the Honors aspect of the those majors, that’s a bit different, but just for the regular BCN major, you don’t need to apply for anything. For me, declaring for both my majors took a total of 5 minutes, it’s not meant to be an application process where only a select number of kids get the major.
However, I have no idea what the Musical Theatre major is so I may be wrong on that particular aspect. But for BCN i know for sure there is no such application.
Well it seems to me like it’s probably possible to get in one and not the other. Their musical theatre major is extremely competitive with a 3% acceptance rate or something like that.
My D is applying for both music Ed and vocal performance, and even though they’re in the same school, they have separate requirements (eg, auditions, interviews) and different groups of faculty will be making admissions decisions for each major.
You need to look at UofM’s details about double major. SMTD (school of music, theatre and dance, which musical theatre belongs to) would allow double-major in other college. I am not sure if the college where the majors you mentioned belong to would allow it or not. For examples, you can apply to both SMTD and LSA (college of literature, sciences and arts) and you can get accepted by one, but not by the other. Or course by both as well.
Ps break a leg, @Company!!
You would apply to LSA (for BCN) and SMTD (for MT). As noted above, MT is a highly competitive, audition-based process. Not sure what year you are, but the deadline for MT application is already passed for Fall 2016 admissions so you should already be in the midst of that process if you are applying now. You could be accepted for one, both or neither schools (LSA and SMTD) as they make independent decisions.
Note this would actually be a dual degree program, not dual major, because you would be working toward an AB or BS in LSA for BCN and a BFA in SMTD for MT. (That’s a mouthful of acronyms!) Both degrees would be challenging in their own rights and you have the complicating scheduling logistics of lengthy theater classes and rehearsals. So while possible, it would be quite difficult and almost certainly take more than four years.
FYI, there are at least a handful of students, my D included, pursuing dual degrees in SMTD in music and in another area, but I don’t personally know of anyone currently doing a dual degree with MT.
Hope this helps!
