“a lot of people do systems engineering with some kind of business emphasis/concentration within the engineering school itself”

In the e-school there is an Engineering Business minor that sounds like exactly what you’re talking about. It requires ECON2010, COMM2010, STS4510, and three electives. Of the list of possible electives, there are around 15 COMM classes, 8 STS classes, 4 SYS classes, 1 CS class, 2 CE courses, and 5 ECON classes to choose from.

If you’re a Civil Eng. student, you can take one of the two eligible CE courses and have it count towards both your major and the engineering business minor. Same goes for systems engineers and SYS courses.

In conclusion: engineering major + engineering business minor is definitely doable.

HOWEVER. Baehlor, you’re asking about civil engineering and finance. I believe finance is a major only within the comm school, so to do Civ Eng and Finance, you’d have to be in both schools. A second year friend of mine at UVa knows a guy in both the e-school and comm school; he has no life and studies all the time. In your case, there will almost be no overlap between CE and F courses, so good luck overloading your semesters, it won’t be fun.
