So I’ve been admitted in the A&S as a CS major an I wanted to know if it was possible to double major in CS and Business/Commerce. Since that’s going to be from a completely different college I don’t know how this works or if it’s even doable. Does anyone here have an experience with this and can help me?
Why not CS and economics?
I have a friend who is doing that. It’s possible, but you’ll have to knock out a lot of CS classes during your first two years and probably take more than the normal 15 credits/semester during your first two years and after fall semester third year. It is doable though
Because I’m not just majoring in business so that I can learn about money, I am doing it so that I can be more competitive when applying for jobs and make it easier to get into a managerial position.
@yankeeboy23 Do you have any idea what are the requirements for the major in business? I can’t seem to find them on the internet. How many more credits does it require?
@Yemen4u2 you will have to apply to McIntyre School of Commerce during your Second Year and if accepted the program begins Third Year. There are pre-requisites that you need to have done before applying. Take a look at the McIntyre site for information. Admission is competitive. You also will have to get through many of your CS requirements in the first 2 years.
Since it doesn’t look as though someone who’s a cs/comm double major is going to chime in, you can look into this by checking out the major requirements online:
Comm - http://records.ureg.virginia.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=39&poid=4325&hl=bachelor+of+science+commerce&returnto=search
BACS - http://records.ureg.virginia.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=39&poid=4321&hl=bachelor+of+science+commerce&returnto=search (and major website - http://www.cs.virginia.edu/acad/ba/images/flowchart.pdf)
So for your first and second years, you’ll need to fulfill 8 comm prereqs: COMM 1800, COMM 2010, COMM 2020, ECON 2010, ECON 2020, ENWR 1510, MATH 1210, and STAT 2120. Some of these also fulfill area requirements for the College; for example, ENWR 1510 is an area requirement, MATH 1210 definitely counts for science/math area, and I’m guessing the statistics and econ courses might too - you can check on SIS. Also, as a prereq it looks like you may have to fulfill your humanities and foreign language area reqs. In your third and fourth years as a comm student, you’ll need 39 credits in the comm school and 57 credits total (in the third and fourth years), including a 24-credit core divided over fall and spring of your third year.
For BACS, you’ll need 14 courses including the pre-req. Some courses have a flow of prerequisites (ex. http://www.cs.virginia.edu/acad/ba/images/flowchart.pdf). And, of course, since it’s in the College, you’ll need to fulfill area and competency requirements, found here: http://college.artsandsciences.virginia.edu/requirements/area. From what I can tell, if you take out all of the requirements you can satisfy with comm prereqs, you’ll still need 3 credits of social sciences, 6 credits of humanities, 3 credits of historical studies, 3 credits of NWP, 5 credits of nat sci/math, 3 credits of second writing requirement, and 14 credits of foreign language requirement - assuming you don’t place out of any of these with test scores and have to start with foreign language 1010. There might be comp sci courses that fulfill area requirements, or maybe comm school courses; I don’t know.
Try mapping this out on a sample schedule - remember, 5 courses (about 15 credits) per semester is average; don’t count on doing much more than that, particularly in your first semester or two. And please please please talk with an advisor as soon as you can. All I did was a little googling, so everything I said could be wrong, as I’m neither a cs major nor a comm schooler - just trying to help a little.
Scratch my convoluted explanation, this link is better https://www.commerce.virginia.edu/undergrad/prerequisites
