I'm not really sure how all this works... I applied for a major but wasn't told anything about getting it/not getting it upon acceptance. I'm also interested in possibly double majoring or minoring in music. Is this possible? I know at NYU you can't go back and forth between two departments and get majors for both (like double major in business and music); is this the same case with UR? I'm interested primarily in science but would like to accent my education with music.
Relatively Random Topic: I appealed Finaid and it worked! I'm visiting Rochester this weekend (I'm from California) and I hope I'll find it to my liking :)

Double majors are pretty common at UR. I believe you can count 3 classes toward both. A double major eliminates the 2 cluster requirement. I believe the requirements are major and 2 clusters, major plus minor and 1 cluster or two majors.

If you mean music at UR and not at Eastman, that’s a department and thus you can do that.

First of all, relax about the major thing. Students do not choose a major until sophomore year when they apply to be accepted into their major dept. This is pretty much a formality as UR does not have impacted or restricted majors.

And yes, you can move back & forth among departments. Music is a pretty common minor/second major at UR.

(BTW, one perk of being at UR is the free music lessons available to UR students at Eastman. Students who are at an immediate level or above on their instrument are eligible to take lessons–even if they aren’t music majors or minors. Auditions are the first week of classes.)

And merely having a second major does not automatically eliminate the 2 cluster requirement. It only eliminates it if both majors fall into different areas.

One major/minor in humanities + one major/minor in science—> 1 cluster in social science

One major/minor in science + one major/minor in science —> 2 clusters (one in humanities and one in social sciences)

If you have questions about double majoring, you will get a chance to ask them when you meet with your advisor during freshman orientation.

Lergnom - So I can’t do something at Eastman and the normal campus?
WayOutWestMom - Okay, thanks for telling me I don’t have to choose a major until sophomore year! That’s relieving :)

amanda-- you cannot get a bachelor of music (or a music minor) from Eastman unless you’ve been accepted at Eastman.

Did you apply to Eastman?

UR does offer a BA with a music concentration and a number of different music minors and clusters, but the coursework is through the URoch music dept and not Eastman.

Except for private instrument lessons, you would not be taking coursework at Eastman.

There are students who get a BM from Eastman and a BA/BS from URoch–but they have been accepted into both colleges.

Thanks, wayoutwestmom! I found the link especially helpful and thanks for pointing out the distinction for me
