Double Majoring at Columbia

Hi, all. I was admitted to Columbia College and was wondering how hard it is to double major at Columbia (specifically in chemistry and computer science) with fufilling the requirements of the core curriculum. Any imput at all would help. Thanks.

It's do-able. Chem-CS is obviously harder than sociology - art history, both in terms of the number of courses required and the subject matter itself. However, you shouldn't have to overload or anything; you'll just have less opportunities to take electives.

It is barely doable. You'd have to plan out your track from the start.

do you have a really good reason to double major instead of major-minor?

Dont dissuade him. I think it is admirable. I am going to do a double major myself, and no matter how useful it will be, I would exhort you to do so, especially if you are so fond of it. After all, you should try to make the best out of your academic experience.

I think if you love you subject matter a double major is pretty simple to do BUT it does limit some of your options in terms of courses you might LIKE but don't need. Also, if you can handle twenty plus hours a semester then it is really easy and you get to take things outside your major interests.

One semester I did not realize I had 22 hours until pretty far into the semester ... I was busy just enjoying the classes but the work caught up with me around mid-terms.

as About Time above me said, it severely limits your options in other classes. in high school you can only be exposed to but so much, college is a great place to try new things, take classes you've never heard of(arabic poetic consciousness, behavioral neuroscience, etc), learn a weird language (catalan, tagalog, etc) and more.

if you're really dead set on limiting yourself then at least focus on the core your freshman year and try to explore your possibilities with that as much as possible
