I will be entering UVA as a first-year this fall, and I am interested in the five-year teaching program through the Curry School of Education. I would most likely be doing elementary education. I was just wondering if it is possible to accomplish this while also doing another major in the College of Arts and Sciences?

I've been trying to research this for a while, but I can't find anything that answers my question.

First let me clarify that in the 5 year program you have 1 major (anything you want – for instance I am a math major) and then you get your masters in elem ed, so it is basically like double majoring for 5 years. I am going to assume you are asking if you can have 2 majors and then also do elem ed in the curry school. So. It’s really hard to even do the 5 year program – I came in with almost 2 years of AP credit and I’ve had to take 3 summer sessions because of scheduling conflicts. Some majors, like studio art, are completely impossible to do while in the program (I know one girl doing it, she’s crazy; another of my friends did art history instead and even that is hard for scheduling! she does summer classes every year too). So you should try and stick to 1 major plus the curry school elem ed major (I am an elem ed major so trust me about this). For example your fourth year you only have 2 or 3 classes you can pick to take and the rest are required ed classes 8am-11am and then 1pm-4pm just about every day (I have 8pm-noon Tuesday and no 1-4pm class but a 1-4pm class every other day and 8am’s every day and I’m ONLY taking curry classes) – though we do get Fridays off CAUSE WE NEED IT!. So you can see how you basically have to have your major done by the end of your third year unless you want to do even more summer classes. Hope that helps.

hi, this was great info…
i have a question for hazelorb, could I do the 5year program and my other major be communication sciences and disorders, which is also in the curry school.

Can students transfer into the 5 year program? even though it may not be 5 years.
Also, how are curry school students…closeknit…competitive??

your major must be through A&S, all curry majors are special majors not part of the teacher ed program except health/pe. teacher ed is special since it certifies you to teach, all other curry majors have big letters saying “this doesn’t certify you to teach” due to state requirements etc

you can transfer but you have to take a lot of summer classes. you should transfer by your 2nd year. otherwise just do the PGMT which is a 2 year program for people with a BA in something else

students become close 4th year. not competitive.
