How common is it to double major at Rice? Is it manageable?

A lot of people double major here. It’s certainly common, and I wouldn’t be surprised if a majority of students did it.

As far as manageability goes, it depends on a few factors. The biggest one would be figuring out which majors you want. Some require a lot more coursework than others. Second, you may have to look at things like AP/IB credit, to get you out of the intro classes (this is especially true for science/engineering majors).

For example, it’s very very tough to pair Chemical Engineering with something else, although I know a few people who have. It’s relatively easier to get a double major in Classical Studies and History.

This is true due to the size of each major. ChemE for example required 134 credits as part of the major to graduate. Unless you transfer in with credits to test out of the basic sciences and some distribution, your courseload is more or less set for each year.

It also depends on whether you have an extra semester to spend, want to graduate early, go abroad etc.
