i heard that a lot of people at rice double major. what about double majoring in different departments? like science and humanities? is that okay?

yes, it’s totally okay to major in different schools! not a problem at all. To make sure you’re fulfilling all the requirements, though, please make sure to check the General Announcements (they will be listed online) which show the requirements needed for your major(s) and also university-wide requirements.

Well, I’m pretty sure that in such a scenario you would be pursuing two separate degrees. Also, the courses you would take for each would have little to no overlap (except for distribution), so it would probably take longer.

can classes for your major also count towards distribution? like if i majored in history and bio, those are two different distribution areas and i would obviously have a lot of classes in both so i would only have to take classes for the third distribution right?

Yes it is very possible. Work with academic advising to make sure you wont be overloaded, but other than that go ahead.

I am confused about this overlap thing. I am planning on double majoring in MTEC and Stats. I think STAT 310(or some other course number, can’t remember) is required for both majors. So, how do I go about it?

it counts for both.

Overlap means if you do math and physics, all the basic science courses will count for both. If you do Chemical Engineering and Theatre as I was, you have to take ALL the courses from both majors.

@bbaral12, you have to take the courses that overlap only once. When double majoring, people often choose majors that have a significant amount of overlap.
