Double Majoring

I was accepted to USC as a Roski Studio Art BA Major. I definitely want to double major and really like the idea of Communications BA. I've heard of a lot of students double majoring in subjects like Bio and Communications or Psych and Communications, so would Studio Art and Communications be possible?
-What is the process like when you have to apply to the Communications school (do you just need a 3.0?)?
-When do you begin doing your second major coursework?
-The Communications majors has a lot of required classes, does this mean it would take 5 years? (Then again, people I've seen who double majored in bio and comm also have a lot of bio required classes and they managed to do it.)
-If I find that I would like to switch my Studio Art major into a minor, is it possible?

As long as your double major is the same type of degree (BA/BA, BS/BS) then you will be able to graduate in 4 years. If you pursue a degree of a different type (BA/BS, BS/BFA) you will have to take an additional 32 units on campus (equivalent of 1 year) in order to receive a second bachelor’s. Apply to the school that you are thinking of double majoring in and meet with an advisor. You can pretty much begin taking your second major coursework whenever you want. As long as you meet the prerequisites and major requirements for each major, you’re golden!

Awesome! My studio art and communications is both a BA! I start USC in the fall so how owuld I apply to the school I want to double major in because I already am accepted into of them.

Once you’re on campus and you meet with your academic advisor, (whether you schedule an appointment with them in the fall, or it’s mandatory) they can tell you more information about applying to Annenberg for Communications!

It’s not as simple as, “Oh, if they’re both BA’s you can finish in four years.” This is only to differentiate between double major and dual degree.

The BA Studio Art major has 64 major specific units required. This is in addition to 32 GE units (assuming Cat 6 and Diversity overlap) and 12 foreign language units. The BA Communications degree has 48 major specific units required. This adds up to 156 units total.

Assuming the standard 18 unit load per semester each semester with no summer classes, the typical student has a max credit capacity 144 units. Therefore, if femmefatale wishes to finish both degrees in 4 years, she will need to overload to 20 credits for six semesters (6 x 2 = 12) or 12 credits over the summer take summer classes.

Thanks Lencias! I have some AP credits that I can probably use to get some GE courses out of the way so that could help. Also, I’m not against taking summer courses.

Np, femme :D

Here’s a list of AP courses and how they translate to USC:
[USC ARR : Articulation : Advanced Placement Exams](http://www.usc.edu/dept/ARR/articulation/apexams.html)

The AP courses that translate to GE credit with scores of 4 or 5 are:
Cat 3: Biology, Chemistry, Physics
Cat 1: Art History, European History
