Double Majoring

A friend of mine who is going to ND asked me if you could major in two different colleges (ie School of Business and School of Arts and Letters; or School of Arts and Letters and School of Engineering)

I know that it is very popular to double major, but just wanted to verify that you could choose two majors or a major and two minors that are in completely different colleges (i.e. Business and Chinese and Spanish)

The Bulletin did not seem all that clear, but I just want to verify this before I tell him.

It is certainly possible, but sometimes difficult logistically. You must first decide which college is going to be your primary college - Business requires that you name it as your primary college - and must satisfy all their requirements, while also satisfying the requirements for your second major.

There is also the option of completing a dual degree, which demands completion of the requirements for both colleges, as well as University requirements. In some cases, they overlap (especially for Business and A&L), but in general it is extra work, resulting in two degrees.

Both are certainly feasible, but require careful planning. Dual degree often takes 5 years to complete.

ok, the one good thing that he has going for him is that he will probably walk into ND with about 30 credit hours of AP credits, so he has a head start

thanks for the help

Yeah, in that case, it is probably possible to get a dual degree in 4 years. I’m dual degree (BS in biochemistry and BA in Chinese) and will graduate in 4 years. I had 23 AP credits coming in and I’m taking 8 credits this summer in Taiwan.

It is possible to do a double major in two colleges, though not easy. My daughter came in to ND with 40 AP credits and is majoring in Science pre-professional in the college of science, (SCPP) and Music in the college of arts and letters. She has had to carry 18+ credits for all 4 semesters so far, but is going stong. She did name the Science SCPP as her primary degree though. Just fyi

thanks for the info, i will pass on all the great advice!
