Doubting my choices -- psych & animation double major??

I’m a HS senior at a prep school; my grades and background are fairly good, and getting into reach schools isn’t my biggest obstacle – finding schools and deciding what I want to do are. I want to double major in psychology, possibly with a focus on biology and genetics, and animation, with a focus on drawing and 2D (not in relation to eachother, just because I like both). Finding schools proficient in both areas is a challenge in itself, I’m here to ask whether I should really keep the psych major. Art and animation is my main passion, but I’m very interested in psychology as well, and I’d feel safer with two degrees rather than just an art degree if I do decide to pursue psych in grad school.

However, upon trying to start an AP psych research paper that was assigned four days ago and due in two, I kind of started freaking out and questioning whether I could really do this for another four years. I have ADHD, and even though I’m on medication and in therapy, I really struggle with time management on long, self-disciplined projects. I love psych, and I’m great in the classroom, but when it comes to writing papers and reading for homework I have a very difficult time. In college, I expect that there will be more major graded assignments than small ones, which I’m the worst at getting done. Art is the only thing that I can reliably find the motivation to do, even if it’s a boring assignment (relative to other art assignments), but it’s so hard to find the motivation to do homework involving reading and writing much of the time.

Should I still try to pursue psych, or should I just minor in psych so I don’t have to deal with this? The most upsetting part is that I’m passionate about the subject, but the structure of school and homework is holding me back from thriving.

You don’t have to make any hard-and-fast decisions now. And even if you decide to try out psychology in your first year of school, that doesn’t mean you have to stick with it forever.

College, and life in general, is filled with time management and long-term projects. As an adult with ADHD, you’ll learn strategies to help you cope with those and figure out which ones to avoid. But psychology isn’t the only field with them, so avoiding psychology won’t necessarily solve the problem.

If you are really interested in it, at least give it a try.
