I was so excited about going to IU, and then I got accepted, and now I’m doubting about whether I should go or not. First off, I’m from Virginia and the out of state tuition is insanely high. However, I received a lot of scholarships, so I should be fine for the first year. Secondly, I’m having a hard time finding a roommate. I don’t want to be randomly assigned a roommate, because I want to get to know the person I’m sharing a room with beforehand. Thirdly, I am just worried that I won’t make a lot of friends, or I won’t like the campus/college. So, is it normal to have doubts about something I was so certain about? Is this just a phase that everyone goes through?
- It's certainly normal to have doubts about your college choice - it is an important decision. That said, you need to have a financial plan in place for wherever you go. Saying "I should be fine for the first year" does not sound good and sounds like you may be at risk of dropping out because you can't pay. It's perfectly okay if IU is too expensive, but make sure you figure that out with your parents/guardians ASAP!
- As for finding a roommate, did you try RoomSync? IU should have sent out an email about it - it helps match people with roommates based on interests. I met one of my best friends on there.
- Making new friends is definitely doable at IU - just leave your dorm door open and talk to people. That said, if you aren't the greatest at making friends (like me), it might not be a bad idea to go to a school where a lot of people from your HS go. A lot of people from my HS went to IU, and I'm still good friends with a few of them today.
- Keep in mind that 2 and 3 really don't matter if you can't afford IU. What other options do you have if that is the case?
Have to agree on that your statement about being okay financially for the first years would be a concern. What about the rest of the years you would be there. Before choosing any school I would make sure to understand the finances and how you will be paying for the school.
As for the roommate, my D found her’s using the Schools App. For her it was a bit slim on the choices but she was able to find one. Room Sync also looks like a good way to search.
As long as you leave your room you should be able to meet people. I was just there with my D a few weeks ago and we had a tour of the residence hall she will be in next fall and I saw plenty of students out in the lounges, or in their rooms with their doors open and they all were very friendly.
What is your major? What are your other options? I can tell you I went out of state to school to a location where I had never been before, didn’t know anyone and was a random selection on my roommate. Worked out great for me. The campus is pretty active and the few times we’ve visited I have been amazed at the number of people I see out and about on campus.
