I’m eagerly waiting to hear back from Indiana University for an admissions decision on transferring in the beginning of my sophomore year. I have a 3.94 GPA and involvement so I would be surprised not to be admitted.
I was informed that on campus housing is already full. My concerns of living off campus are that I will be far from classes and find it hard to hard to make friends. I was actually looking forward to spending an additional year in the dorms to make friends. Can anyone advise on where I should look to find a roommate in an apartment near campus that is a student? Are there websites for this? Specific Facebook groups? Also, how do you recommend I make a true connection with the campus when I don’t know anyone and will only be on campus for classes? I need to make sure I have a solid friend group and enjoy my surroundings.
Thank you!
So IU housing is FUBAR at the moment. They have unexpectedly closed 2 of the biggest dorms form renovation due to mold. Pretty much only Freshman are getting on campus dorms. The University rented a few apartment complexes to use as student housing. I believe they will be busing kids to campus.
So now is the time to get your housing ducks in a row so you can act the minute you get accepted. Check with RPS (the housing people) about your possible options thru the University. Also, contact some of the college apartments to get on a waiting list – Evolve, Smallwood, etc. come to mind. They are like “private dorms” and cater to students. Also, search for the facebook pages where kids are posting sublet options. Kids who aren’t coming back are starting to let go of their rooms. Google will be your friend. Good luck.
IU housing is a mess this year but the good news is you wouldn’t be the only one. Assuming you can find a place in a complex you will most likely be surrounded by other IU students. Your best bet is meeting others in the apartment complex by going to any social events, hang out by the pool, etc. The thing I have seen with my D is that she doesn’t really hang out much on campus. She lives in a sorority house so she is normally hanging out there when not in class. If she is on campus hanging out it is usually in the School of Ed (Education Major). You may also figure out where the people of your major might hang out and study and see if you can get in with a group that way.
Usually there are Facebook groups for incoming students, that was how my D found her roommate her freshman year.
