Down Comforter

It’s that time of the year to purchase bedding for my incoming freshman.

What weight of down comforter should I purchase for her for those cold winter nights in Amherst?

My S is at an even colder school. I wouldn’t go w/down for two reasons. One, the dorm may be too warm for it, and two, a roommate may be allergic to down.

He had a polyfill comforter and was never cold.

YMMV.

I got D a down comforter, not sure what weight it was though. It was the top of the line at BB&B. Originally $500, marked down to $250, then with the 20% coupon, was only $200! My thinking was to buy her a larger one so she could use it for years to come, so we got her a queen size. I thought it would be great to have a huge comforter compared to the size of her bed, but she didn’t like it hanging off the bed. She is now going to ship it home to me, and get a smaller size. I know your D doesn’t know which dorm she is in yet, but my D’s room was too warm, so they had to close off part of the vent. We probably wont go for the down again

If not down, then what?

Down alternative…regular comforter…

Thanks for everyone’s input.

My kid just got an bottom-of-the-line, economy polyfill comforter at BB&B. He was fine with it. In fact, like GA2012Mom says, the dorms are pretty warm. Too warm, even, much of the time.

We could the cotton/fiberfill too, but not the cheapest. I’m a style hound. He didn’t care.

I will say that I also insisted my D get a more expensive one, and she went through all four years with the same one. I think S will too.

D just graduated and she had a down twin comforter and featherbed. Due to the economy, they turned down the thermostats and she was thrilled to have them. The kids complained apparently, very loudly, so they turned them up, but just a bit. According to her, it depends on the room as to whether or not it is hot or cold. Ad, it depends on the kid - do they like it colder or warmer?
