What exactly is the UCSD's download policy? Do they completely forbid students to download anything at all or is there a limit to it? And.... if I dl with bitorrent, is it more inconspicuous? thanks

I heard bittorrent is a big NO. It's very conspicuous.

im sure there are dc++ hubs

Well... any1 heard of emule? is that ok? and what's dc++ hubs?

directconnect ... it was THE place to download from during the 2003-2004 school year.

load up on filesharing before u go! ^_^

...i didnt say anything xD

beware though...directconnect is also where about 30 students got busted during the 2004-2005 school year!

Okay so BASICALLY... if I want to use limewire I have to wait until I get home? :(

does anyone use vdownloader, where you get music from youtube? that's definitely not allowed either right?

just go to youtube to listen to music :D

or itunes' music-sharing dealie ... it's GENIUS!

peachsorbet: I really don't see how the RIAA would bust you for that. It would do the same thing as watching the video once. Do that as much as you want.

Anyways...

If you're going to use UCSD's network to get music.. Do it legally. The RIAA and the MPAA specifically focus on college campuses and the schools will simply bend right on over and give them your information so you can receive a nice little letter telling you that you owe tens of thousands of dollars in fines. :-)

Alternatives:

1.) Download the Microsoft Zune software and buy a Zune Pass. For $15 a month, you can download UNLIMITED music. If you buy a Zune music player (highly recommended :-) ) you can now buy music straight from your player with the upcoming software updates! If $15 a month is too much, split the account with a few friends. All of a sudden you're looking at $3 a month. MUCH more reasonable, eh?
2.) Internet radio. Pandora is great!

3.) Drive around until you can find an unsecured wireless network and download to your hearts content. Warning... You might get the owner of the network in legal trouble. Consider the consequences of your actions.

Bottom line... DON'T DOWNLOAD WITH BITTORRENT, LIMEWIRE, FROSTWIRE, DC++, ETC.!! IT'S NOT WORTH THE HEIGHTENED RISK.

what about sites that just let you download directly? not exactly legally, but you just click & download, how will they know? I'm not trying to sidestep, I just want to understand how exactly they track what you download if you're not using programs like limewire, bittorrents.

oh right that's another alternative... sites like playlist.com, rapidshare, megaupload, etc. should be fine. just download in moderation. lots of downloading will draw some attention.

so we can't use any bittorrent programs at all? no limewire??? how often do they catch ppl, and does the RIAA enforce the rules when you get caught or the college?

No. No Bittorrent. No Limewire. Peer Guardian will not save your ass. The RIAA usually scares the pants off people so that they settle without a lawsuit and pay far more than what the music they downloaded was worth. UCSD will also punish you for the act too. Have a friend download music for you from outside and send it to you if you're desperate. Download at an internet cafe. Figure something out but be smart about it.

So, its ok if we ask a friend to download and send it to us via msn or aim?

yes that's fine. just don't download with UCSD's servers

So there's still a small risk that you can get caught if you use rapidshare or megaupload?

so....

legally downloading from a the copyright company is fine even though it is a big file?
