There are a few threads on this already, but the short answer is: yes, you can.

As long as it’s not open p2p (public bittorrent, etc), it’s okay right?

They do monitor it. I’ve gotten warnings in the past when it was p2p (specifically torrents), but there are a few private p2p that function within the university. Though chances of finding it are slim, since they don’t want to get caught.

Stay away from public trackers like The Priate Bay, Mininova, or w/e people are using these days. Those are dangerous to use at home, at school, etc. Either use private trackers, or find some sort of direct download option.

@above^ Really? There are warnings? I always thought the policy was “we don’t look to catch you, but we won’t help you if you get caught”. I am a VERY heavy traffic user, using all of my weekly allotted 20GB last year, and never got warnings. This year I will do the same with my 50GB.

but downloading is not a good idea since u may be using too much of ur memory, once u reach that limit, u’ll be moved to secondary server.

my suggestion to u is, go home once in a while and do ur good stuff there.

while you may use up all your bandwidth on downloading, you can buy more bandwidth AND all the UT sites will still load on your computer at normal speed.

If you’re a big downloader like me, just get a higher tier. Last year I got 20GB, and this year I was planning on getting the 40GB. But ITS just sent out an email today about upgrading the plans for the same prices! They did this last year too.

Now the plans are:
Tier I: 5 GB/week (up from 4 GB/week)
Tier II: 25 GB/week (up from 20 GB/week)
Tier III: 50 GB/week (up from 40 GB/week)
Tier IIII: 75 GB/week (up from 60 GB/week)

Tier 1 is perfectly fine for 90% of users, and tier II is useful if you occasionally download a few HD movies. I had it last year. This year though I am going with Tier III. I am unsure who uses the 4th tier, since I’ve never known anybody to buy it.

@ Why Two Kay

Of all the things that I (may have) downloaded, you know what did me in?? A f-ing answer guide to the calc book for 408C. ■■■

Though all I had to do was delete and they told me that they’d be watching me. o_0

i use www.zippysharemp3.com to download music
i likemostly rap and dance music for me

you dont have to download a program like limewire, just grab songs from the internet
free= good :)

Yeah they monitor it and you can get in trouble.

I know people who got huge fines for it last year.

Tier 1 is DEFINITELY not enough…
I regularly use FBook, watch videos on Hulu, listen to Pandora, and it drains easily within a day…

Usenet+newsgroup binaries+ssl+resnet = 10MB/s of win

Resnet is really the only thing I miss about the dorms.

Try Spotify… it’s 100% legal and does the job.
