I have loved it. I am now in a situation where I signed a year round lease near my mother to take care of her more intenselty and she just went on hospice and may die before I move to the place!
I would dearly love to go back to my wanderings. I can live in a place on the river in coastal MA from Sept. to June, with glass sliding doors and deck. But I signed that lease…!
compmom - maybe if the situation changes you could break the lease? Not sure how that works with penalties (or the ethics of it?) but I’m thinking with housing in such short supply the landlord could most likely rent it out quickly. Then you could travel again…!
An update for those of you wanting to follow our move to Santa Fe from Austin. A few days before our house closing I landed in the ER with what turned out to be a perforated colon due to diverticulitis with an abscess. My husband had to close on our house using power of attorney while I was in surgery. Due to complications I was in the hospital for 12 days. I’m home recuperating now and we are moving on with our plans but we will have to hire help to replace my manpower. We have about 4 weeks to finish packing and get on the road.
On the bright side, we’ve found a temporary rental in Santa Fe and my husband is up there now looking at a house that is a possibility for purchase. It is a modest house in a modest central neighborhood - not a step up from what we just sold except for the fact that we get to live in Santa Fe instead of Austin where we are already absolutely roasting. It’s been a crazy roller coaster with plenty of (justified) second guessing, but here we go!
@newpreironic hope the healing is fast and uneventful. You definitely had your fair share of unfortunate events during this move. Also hope the right house will be found, soon.
Hope you recover quickly. A couple of my family members have had similar issues with diverticulitis so I know how painful it is and the difficulties in recovery. I hope Santa Fe is a healing change!
@newpreironic - so glad you got through surgery okay and are recovering! Perforated colon is a challenge - hope you can rest and recover (good you hired helpers!). Positive thoughts for continued, steady recovery and ongoing good health!
We have a camper van that is 19 ft (4WD, wet bath, kitchen, dining, and murphy full size bed) and can easily fit in a regular parking spot. I follow on YouTube several people who downsized to this during covid work from home or in retirement. Some are couples, many are singles. All seem to have a dog or cat or two. We have lived in it (dog and cat) traveling for 4 weeks at a time but usually just a few days at a time. It would be a challenge full time but could work. Really no different than a micro apartment or shared living in NYC that our kids did. The west is much easier to find BLM land for living. It’s an interesting life style choice.
Fun idea. I had a feeling that campers might make a comeback when people got excited about Tiny Houses but realized they are a pain to tow. The small size could be compensated by a location with nice climate … and some people enjoy moving by season.
Yes BLM in this case is Bureau of Land Management. Basically land (free or very low price to stay) that never made it to a national monument or state park or national park level. It’s huge in the western states and very rustic and natural.
There is a lot of discussion about single women traveling alone. They seem to be self selective. Having a dog, bear spray (need it anyway), and leaving large boots at the door step is mentioned. The guys don’t seem to have travel alone issues or they never mention it.
You can always stay long term at a RV park if needed. I have a friend and his wife who at retirement sold their CO home (stored some belongings) and took off in their Airstream travel trailer. They planned on storing the RV at a TX senior living apartment next to where his very elderly mother lived in an assisted living. Well then a month later covid hit! The senior living was in lock down (they left) and his mother died of other causes in a month. They then lived in the 23 ft Airstream in various quiet RV parks out west for the next two years. They now live in a smaller downsized version of a home back in CO and sold their Airstream.
