<p>Pubic transit is notoriously bad so kids either drive in a personal car or split a cab.</p>
<p>The answer to your last question varies kid to kid and week to week but with the Riverwalk close by and an active student activities board and outdoor club students never HAVE to stay on campus though some may choose to.</p>
<p>Like the previous poster said, there are lots of things to do downtown. I’m not sure where you’re from, but if you’re not familiar with it, the Riverwalk is a river with restaurants and some shops running alongside it. It’s very pretty and fun to just walk along. There are several malls–the only one I’ve been to is the Riverside (I think that’s what it’s called), and it has standard department stores, a Forever 21, Claire’s, Limited, Hot Topic, etc.</p>
<p>I’m a parent not a student. But my observation is that people get together (with someone who has a car) to make runs to Target/Walmart/grocery stores. But for fun/shopping they’re likely to head to the NorthStar Mall (on 410 in the airport area) or the Quarry, a lovely area which has restaurants and movies.</p>

<p>My sense is that lots of kids have cars, so rides are relatively easy to find. And cabs are always an option. Again, perhaps a student will chime in here with better info.</p>
<p>I went to Trinity long ago but visited it with my daughter last April, and I can tell you not much has changed in terms of what students do for fun. Having San Antonio’s wonderful downtown so close to TU was great, but most of the time there were a lot of fun things going on on campus. People had great parties in their dorms (mention “fake disco party” to anyone of my era and watch their face light up), and there were always big schoolwide parties and events to go to on campus. Going downtown was never a regular thing to do in my day, and it’s probably less a destination for current students because it’s gotten so touristy and expensive. Students are more likely to go to affordable restaurants and shops closer to school.</p>
<p>I did not have a car my freshman year. If I wanted groceries I walked to the grocery store (not far) or I bummed a ride with someone. Like the other posters said, it’s easy to bum a ride or borrow a car.</p>
<p>I am an international student at Trinity and don’t own a car. But, I do not have any problem getting to Downtown because a public transport bus stops right by Trinity which takes me to Downtown.</p>
<p>Getting to grocery stores like HEB is also easy, just one bus that stops behind the library. There are also monthly trips to grocery and shopping centers sponsored by the university for students who need it. So, not having a car can make it inconvenient but not impossible to travel. Having downtown and Riverwalk so close to Trinity makes Trinity’s location ideal.</p>
