Downward dip in grades junior fall?

Hi there –

My D has consistently been an extremely good student, is very passionate about writing, is the editor of her school newspaper and literary magazine, and recently won a major, national essay contest. She has consistently gotten As/A+s in English, history, and languages. However, she struggles with her math and science courses a little more, usually averaging around an A-/B+. Her junior fall trimester, however, she found herself unable to handle AP Bio and Calculus courses, eventually dropping Bio to take environmental science in the winter and spring. As a result, her GPA fell considerably that trimester.

She has a 2290 SAT (760 CR-800 W-730 M). Her class rank was 5/145 until her junior fall, now it is 13/145. She is applying to many liberal arts schools, as well as most of the Ivies. Her dream schools are Yale and Wesleyan. With this UW GPA trend, do you think she still has a shot at the Ivies?

Freshman year: 3.9
Sophomore year: 3.8
Junior fall: 3.25
Junior winter: 3.87
Junior spring: 3.9
Senior fall: 3.9

Anyone?

Pls help!

Honestly? No. But that’s o.k. because she will still be a good candidate for other highly selective schools.

If your daughter presents herself properly (Look at me I love to write) then she does have a decent chance. It’d be helpful if you could post her overall GPA instead of the fragmented ones. If she wasn’t considering it, consider UChicago. They value essays over GPA and if your daughter is as talented as you say she can absolutely earn an admission. Best of luck.

Thank you Trickster! I am actually a Chicago alum, as is my husband  D is applying, but we actually live in Naperville and she has expressed that she wants to venture a little farther from home.
