DP editorial today about Penn ED

I disagree with the editorial.
For one, I know Penn is my first choice no matter what, and I REALLY want to go there--so ED would be my best option.

Instead of completely taking away the whole prospect of ED, Penn--if it's concerned if the students it accept ED really want to be there--should look at the "Why Penn?" essay more carefully or see if the student visited the campus or see if the student made an effort to talk to admissions officers, etc.

kliuless- i agree with you, penn has always been my first choice and i think ED is the best way to reward qualified students who really want to be there. although there are RD kids whose first choice is really penn, you will also have a ton of kids applying RD who probably would much rather be at another school

I agree with you guys on that, but the financial aid thing still bothers my conscience.

Actually, I read that the onlything that allows you to back out of ED is money. If you absolutely can't accept their financial offer, you can appeal to them. If they won't give you more, they can't force you to go.

but you have to prove OUTSTANDING financial hardship, given what penn's offering you

those cases are extremely rare.

As far as financial aid goes, I think that if you break an ED contract you might be able to go to a state school or some other affordable school with rolling admissions (i.e. you could have been accepted prior to receiving your decision), you can't just continue with applications to comparable institutions and then change your mind if you get a better offer. Definitely a big gamble.

one of the comments on that page raised an interesting point - the campus is filled with at least 50% kids who are really enthusiastic abt being at penn and not bitter abt being rejected by princeton or harvard

haha yeah, their entering freshman class should consist ONLY of those who applied ED
