Drama at Brown

I am a Junior and at this point I think Brown is my top choice. I was just wondering what anyone’s opinions were on the Drama Program was at Brown. Thanks!

Do you mean the Theater Arts department (drama classes) or drama as an extracurricular activity?

Well I was talking about the Theater Arts Department but I guess it wouldn't hurt to hear about the extracurricular activities.

The theater program was a factor for me in my decision to apply early to brown. I wanted a strong theater program, but not necessarily a BFA (reasons are pretty clear -- i didn't want a degree in waiting tables for the rest of my life without something to fall back on). I chose Brown because of its artsy atmosphere with great theater program and many extracurricular activites -- Musical Forum, Brown Brokers and the mainstage shows through the theater depts. SO many opportunities for theater at Brown. I haven't of course been there yet to judge the theater arts classes, profs or level of difficulty, but I've heard they're great. Check out the Academic Programs site on brown.edu to get a taste for the different classes.
If you're interested in theater or straight drama, I would check out Cornell too. It has a pretty renowned acting department, but it has a much different atmosphere to the general school which turned me off, maybe might attract you to it. Whatever floats your boat.

there are a ton of student run theater groups here. There's Production Workshop (PW) which puts on a play every semester, Musical Forum (MF) does a musical every semester, Brown Brokers puts on an original student written show every year, there's a Gilbert and Sullivan group that does a show every semester, and last night was the debut of the Brown Opera Productions group. And of course there's all the main stage shows that go on throughout the year through the department. I'm only a freshman, and don't really know anything about the actual Theatre Arts Department, but next year i plan on taking TA 23 (Acting) which is supposed to be a good class, i think.

pw actually puts on more than one show every semester. They're quite ambitious. For more about pw:

Each semester, PW puts on three regular shows, a special show, and lends its performance space to MF for its use as well. They are one of the best-run student groups on campus, and really worth looking into.

Theater is very strong at Brown both as a department but also as a place with lots going on extracurricularly in theater. For someone who wants a BA school and is into theater, Brown is high on the list. I say this as a college counselor who also advises theater applicants.

Others already mentioned the various opportunities to participate in plays and musicals on campus. As well, the department itself is strong and puts on shows...they recently put on Hair. I have a daughter who is a soph at Brown but is not going into theater but has a theater background and goes to a lot of the shows. She is even taking a course this semester on the history of American musical theater and it is a small class and she enjoys it a lot and most in it are theater majors (she is an Architectural Studies major, however).

There are many students at Brown with strong theater backgrounds who are very talented and wish to continue in college. I actually know who thisisliz and MattyB are and they are examples of students who are talented and experienced in theater. There are lots of other kids like them at Brown. My daughters have a friend who is a senior at Brown who double majored in theater and classics and has been in many musicals at Brown, as well as wrote one that was staged at Brown. He is on a leave this semester as he was cast as Mark in the National Tour of RENT. I know of others who have degrees from Brown who have been cast in professional theater productions. I have a daughter pursuing a BFA in musical theater at another university and am well versed on theater in this regard.

Brown is a GREAT choice for those who want to either study theater or be involved with theater in college in a BA liberal arts setting. It isn't the same as a BFA program. If opting for the BA route, this school is one that would be recommended for a theater person who is also a very good student.

Wow thank you guys so much.
Yeah I am trying to steer away from the BFA route for now just because a BA would give me more of something to fall back on (theatre isn't exactly the most reliable proffession...)
As far as applying goes... does anybody know if there is an audition or is it just the regular application because it is a BA program?

no audition whatsoever....
