Dream School, Do I have a chance??

Hi - So, i love everything about Tulane! I really want to go here but I am afraid I'll get rejected.

Freshman year, i had a 3.7 UW GPA both semesters, Sophomore year, 4.0 one semester UW and 3.8 the other UW. However, I REALLY messed up everything Junior year, and I got a 2.8 UW GPA first semester, and 3.5 UW second semester. I am going to apply EARLY ACTION. I haven't received my SAT scores back but I'm expecting 700 + in each category based on practice SATs/tests. I have a lot of extra curricular's - Journalism (editor for two years), ASB student leadership, started a mentoring club, did club swimming three seasons, in other clubs, volunteer time around community, camp counselor, and hoping to get an internship this summer for journalism, if not - i will work.

I was wondering if A) you guys think i have any chance whatsoever! B) if i apply early it will increase my chances or i should wait until regular decision C) if i select a more uncommon major in addition to applying early, it will increase my chances even more! even though I would have no interest in continuing that major if i got accepted!

ADVICE PLEASE! HONEST ADVICE!

Chance yes… but downward trends are pretty bad. EA should help quite a bit as Tulane is a bit of a “safety” school for the IVY/ Top 15 kids, they apply RD. So most many match candidates get thrown on the wait-list. Therefore EA is a huge advantage.

I think your application would definitely have a good chance. I think for Tulane (and all of your other apps) you need to think about how to present the one bad semester in a favorable light, but overall, assuming your SAT’s come out as expected, you are easily in the mainstream for Tulane…

Write a great essay with a service mind, Tulane likes that.
Also ur after all GPA probably will be around at least 3.5, which isn’t bad.
2100+ SAT should be average or little above. So, EA should be alright for you!
As Ivygolfer said, Tulane is considered ultimate safety for a lot of people. In my case, I didn’t even think about going to Tulane or know anything about it until I got accepted. But the more I got to know about it and the more I find out about the specific program I’m interested in, the more I feel Tulane is so much better than my few top 15/ ivies I applied to. That’s why I turned down Duke and a few others to come to Tulane! lol I’m glad you are already down with ur research and Tulane is truly a great school! Hope u get in!

As said above, you definitely have a good chance. Forget the part about playing games with your major. That really doesn’t matter at Tulane because everyone gets accepted to Newcomb-Tulane College, not an individual school within the College or University. No sense starting out the process with deception, and besides, they fully know that most students don’t end up with the major they think they want coming in. Focus instead on why you had the aberrant semester. You should strongly consider attending a local Tulane event AND visiting the school, being sure to schedule time with your admissions counselor one of those two times and explaining why. Don’t make excuses or hedge, just say what happened, own up if it was your fault, show that you learned from it, and move on. If it wasn’t your fault and was caused by extreme circumstances, then just explain that and move on. But it is better if there is some note in your file as well as a personal recollection by the counselor when it comes time for them to decide.

The application will likely be free so what do you have to lose. Really spend time with the short essay as to why Tulane. Gear it as to TULANE, not just its a good school. Tulane was definitely a reach for my son but he was a good fit. We also showed a lot of interest - a number of e-mails to admissions as well as the marching band leader. Also he applied early action single choice. And now after all that, we are now planning the logistics of moving in this August. Good Luck

Hey guys I had asked about my shot at getting in earlier this year when i had some vague details in act scores, etc. I get that being chanced doesnt really mean anything but when searching for colleges it is a kind of fun and exciting thing to do (to not offend those who dont like chancing)

Any how, I got a 30 on the act (second score might be higher) , my weighted gpa is about a 4.2 uw 3.4 however i got my first c second semester junior year. I will be a four year varsity athlete in wrestling with leadership award, and have 3 years of football. I participated in a summer program for peace and justice and have planned my own “peace” project. Part of a youth group that requires service. This summer im working for a prairie restoration company which is environmentally friendly. I think thats it.

lastly i will be paying for a lot of college myself, and seeing the numbers for tulanes tuition is a little frightening. I come from a middle class (about $130,000 combined income) but im second youngest of six. Is there anyone with similar stats and economic situation as I am that afford tulane without heaps of debt? Thanks a ton for taking the time to look at this!

Anybody? Especially concerning the financial aid, because that is really what it will come down to in the event i get in. Any knowledge of financial aid is appreciated, numbers are helpful. haha tanks again

Tulane is always great with Merit Scholarship, also need based.
I think over half if not more students get merit aid. It ranges from 5k-25k/yr
I had 4.14 weighed GPA, moderate SAT, and got 15k merit scholarship.
I think you have a good shot at a high merit aid and need based aid also, considering the number of siblings you have.

thank you all so much!! you really were a GREAT help!!!

Don’t worry! Your stats – 2.8 one semester and all – are nearly identical to mine, and I got in with a 20k scholarship! Not to mention I had a suspension and a year in a military boarding academy; trust me, the essay can and will make the difference.
