dress for frat formal

I'm wondering what types of dresses girls typically wear to fraternity formals in college, are full-length dresses okay, or do should I go less formal and try to find a knee-length dress? The dress I'm considering wearing is one I wore to prom, it's not a huge poofy prom-type dress, but does fall around the ankles.

I go to a mid-sized private school, with a moderate greek presense, btw. Any fashion advice/experiences with frat formals?

Here atleast, all of our dates wear dresses, but not like decked out prom style...it depends though, like what kind of formal...if its the biggest one of the Fall probably the prom dress. Ask your sisters...I know a couple of my brothers dates from some sororities dress up more than others from other sororities

really can vary. During my time, and at my school, winter formal was usually a bit more dressy than spring formal in my opinion. But girls definitely wore dresses that they (or their friends) had orignally bought for prom or homecoming in HS. Lots of dress trading within the sororities.

My opinion is that if you look great in it, no one will care what dress you wore. (unless you are so different than everyone else that you stand out horribly)

Better to be slightly underdressed than incredibly overdressed.

My D has attended several fraternity formals. At least at her school in Texas, typically most girls didn't usually do the full-length dress thing.

She usually ended up wearing knee length "cocktail" dresses...halters, strapless, etc. And it's true that borrowing within a sorority is extremely common and helpful.

yeah girls here usually wear old prom dresses to formals and the knee length thigs to semi-formals

Congratulations, you read the Ultimate Preppy Handbook.

No one here wears prom dresses. Then again, our prom dresses were pretty fancy and would look pretty absurd in any other setting (besides a wedding/barmitzvah). A nice, knee-length(ish) dress would be fine.

something knee length and dressy would be fine

What are you talking about? That was something my mom's always taught me...

a black dress would be fine.

I second the knee-length thing.

Yeah i've been to two and its usually the cocktail knee length type of black dress, although no one will really care or comment if you wear a longer one like an old prom dress. Hey it saves money
