Drew and teaching

I am interested in Drew. I love the campus, and location. I want to double major in history and English and get my masters (5 yr-program) in education, and then become a high school teacher. Is anyone here involved in the 5-yr masters program, or planning to be a teacher, and can tell me how they feel about it? And also, do you think in some years from now, Drew will be associated with the same prestige as Bowdoin, or Brandeis?

Does anyone even just know of someone in the program?

Hey snoopy! Unfortunately, I don’t know anything about the 5-year program. But with regard to your question re: Drew’s future prestige…There is no question that this is an exciting – some times frustrating – time of change at Drew. The new Honors program, the increased diversity on campus, new programs, new buildings, etc all point in a very positive direction. However, so much is changing in higher education that making predictions about the future, whether in general or with regard to a particular institution, is virtually impossible.

I don’t know about the 5 yr masters, but I don’t think Drew offers an undergrad education major and I believe students seeking undergrad certification must take courses at a nearby Catholic college (St. Mary’s? St. Eliz’s?). I know of a couple of LACs that offer MEd despite the absence of an undergrad ed prgm, but it’s pretty unusual to find that at a university (since unis, unlike LACs, offer lots of first-prof degree or pre-prof majors).

As for Drew moving up to the level of Bowdoin and Brandeis, probably not, but a school doesn’t have to be in the top tier to offer a good education.

My son knew someone who was going into teaching, I “think” he said the courses at St. Elizabeth’s were changing and they were going to offer them at Drew, but I don’t remember. I would write someone in that department about it. This student was taking classes at St.El and for one year and then he said because of the new program, she didn’t have to continue.
This link is helpful and if your refresh the screen, the students they highlight change. Maybe you can use the contact us link and ask to be able to write someone about it.

Thanks so much for the input, it was helpful!
