I have been researching several colleges for a music program that is specific to what I'm looking for and isn't too expensive (Berklee!!). I'm looking for a music program that leans more towards the commercial side of music (I play guitar, I like blues and rock), and this college looked right for that. Are there any people that have went and majored in music? Can you tell me about your experiences? Also, can you name some other colleges that might be what I'm looking for, preferably located on the east side of the U.S., or the midwest?

Sophie,

Let me first say I do not major in the music program at drexel (The major is called Music Industry). However, I will say that the Music Industry program is one of the best. Its a big program and all my friends love it. The big thing that seperates Drexel's Music Industry program from another colleges is the co-op program. On the 5 year co-op you'll get three 6 month work experiences. It is uncommon for Drexel students to get jobs working for big record companies, or other music industries. Although i'm not in the music industry major, I've participated in a few performing arts ensembles since freshmen year playing guitar including guitar and rock ensemble. Drexel has a few state of the art recording studios (of which I've played in) and all the instructors are very knowledgable. Lastly, Drexel has its own Record Label called "Mad Dragon Records". You may say to yourself so what, but this is one of the greatest opportunities that another college would not have. This is a serious record label and you'd get the opportunity to sign and a lot of student bands sign onto the label and get recognized worldwide. (MySpace.com - MAD Dragon Records - PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania - Alternative / Indie - www.myspace.com/maddragonrecords) There are many other opportunities including the campus radio station that reaches thousands of people where you can jump in and become a DJ even as a freshman. There is also the joint Music Industry/MBA program which I believe no other school has. (Its a rigorous program but in 5 years you'll have your music industry degree, an MBA, and a few co-op work experiences from big record labels - B.S. Music Industry/MBA ) As far as other schools goes, I'm not exactly sure as I did not apply to the music industry program. I'm sure there are a few out there and its best to look around and compare them.
