Drexel Full tuition or University of Michigan?

I am a senior in high school planning on majoring in chemical engineering and I am having a hard time deciding between which college to go to, and I was hoping I could get some feedback. There are so many pro's and con's that I have for both, so any input would be appreciated!! I will list my pro's and con's here:

Drexel:
- planning on doing 5-year bs/ms with 3 co-op, so ill make at least 50,000 out of college, which means no debt and hopefully a job offer
- I am in the honors college already
- am already enrolled in bs/ms program
- not nearly as recognized as Michigan or engineering
- I might get a higher gpa here, but i don't know how much I trust the rank factor, because engineering is tough anywhere

University of Michigan:
- i get in state tuition, so essentially I would haveto pay 50,000 more than for drexel
- I can only get into the bs/ms program here with a 3.6 gpa freshman or sophmore year
- ranked much higher than drexel
- has co-op, so I could still do what I would have at Drexel(3 co-op, although I am not sure how great Michigan's co-op program is- if anyone knows a lot about it, please do tell!)

I am also planning on going to business school in the future, so I dont know if that should factor into this decision now...

Tough one as saving 50,000 would certainly help as a M.B.A. will likely cost you (out-of-pocket).

However, college kids change their minds as to what they want to study all the time. So, you might end up studying something else in college and may never even go to grad school.

I’m a value guy who believes that students can be quite successful at most colleges. It’s what you do that matters more than where you go. However, you are lucky enough to have a great in-state choice making this decision a tough one.

Wow, I just don’t know what to suggest.

If you didn’t know which school were ranked higher and the money were the same … which school impressed you more?

Michigan>Drexel. You are still paying instate pricing for a much better school and a far greater experience. Does the scholarship at Drexel include room and board? If not, then the cost difference will be quite a bit less.

I do not like the college experience at Drexel OR the campus. I am very familiar with it, and I know the co-op program is excellent, but there is just too much lacking about the place. Go with Michigan. It’s worth the money.

Thank you so much for all your feedback!!

Michigan did impress me more, and its campus is much more pleasing to the eye than Drexel’s campus. It is a full tuition scholarship only, so I still have to pay room and board- for all 5 years combined, it is about 32,000. In-state at michigan is about 80,000 and although I am steering toward Michigan, I know that opportunities will be available more readily at Drexel for me because I am an honors student and a presidential scholar (thats the name of the full tuition scholarship). I participated in a program called Drexel Mentorship this past summer (its a research program), and gained a few great contacts over there. That is really my dilemma right now- do I go there, or Michigan?

Also, if anyone knows about Michigan’s co-op program, I would love to hear anything about it!

As a Michigan resident I am one who have put a lot of emphasis on UMich and have an ideal of the good and bad. Although I am not as familier with Drexel I do know about the school. Overall it can be difficult selecting a school on a program, though as you emphasized with Drexel its a option and not a must ( in that your accepted into honors). Due to some large differences of the school it definately may be a more personal preference choice. Though overall I would say Drexel as it would be a win win situation.

@ coolbreeze

so you think that drexel is the better option, even though i could essentially do the same 5-year path at michigan with in-state?

Ofcourse, Drexel is a really good school and your saving 50k that you can put towards graduate school. If you think attending UMich will earn you 20-50k more in your career looking at statistics your wrong.
As we look at statistics of prestige with USNEWS etc… the average graduating student from Drexel earns about 54k for starting salary in engineering, and mid salary at 98k. At UMich the average graduating student starting salary is about 52k, and mid at 92k.

Again these are just statistics, but should you give you the green light to attend Drexel over UMich. Drexel is a win win situation. UMich and MichiganTech statistics numbers are similar when considering engineering.

bluesea, if you are planning to attend business school, I highly recommend Michigan.

There’s a reason why certain industries only recruit at certain schools.

The OP should understand that Coolbrezze is still in high school and was not admitted to Michigan. I would take all of his advise with a grain of salt, although I have no doubt he is sincere in his beliefs.
