Drexel v. SUNY Stony Brook v. Northeastern

For a currently undecided engineering or business/finance major.

Details on each school:

Drexel: Accepted for Business and Engineering Degree, Honors college. potential full scholarship with NMF
SUNY Stony Brook: Accepted for Biomedical Engineering major, full presidential scholarship, waiting to find out about honors college
Northeastern: University scholars program, full scholarship

Any thoughts?

I believe NU is ranked higher for business and engineering out of those 3 schools. It is also much more difficult to get into (by a good 200 SAT points than Drexel out of 2400). The new University Scholars Program seems like a very big deal, but difficult to understand exactly what all the different perks are. It sounds like they are making their version of UVA’s Jefferson Scholar Program. I would fly down to the admit day to get a better feel. I think NU covers the flight for those admitted under the USP

@swimchris - That’s what I was thinking too.

The only thing is is that the USP admit day is before I hear back from any other college, so I’m not sure if I should or not.

Which Ivy are you waiting on? Other schools waiting on?

Boston is by far and away a better college town and better city than Philadelphia. Its not even close. Though Northeastern is a bit of a step child to Harvard, MIT, BC, BU and nearby Tufts.

Boston is also more expensive than Philadelphia.

Where do you come from?

Actually, freshman stats at Northeastern are now higher than at BU.

Attending the Scholars Admit Day in no way commits you to attend Northeastern.

Northeastern with a full scholarship seems tough to beat.

Thanks. I didnt know that. But isnt BU (53) ranked a bunch higher in USNWR than Northeastern (62)? Not that rankings mean anything…because they don’t. Anyway, my point is that Boston is a better place for students, it seems to me. (That could just be my personal bias however.)

I don’t think 9 spots when you get below schools ranked in the top 50 is substantial. Its only actually only a couple of places since there are all these ties. Northeastern has elements that it is much better at then bu (admissions rates, retention rates, alumni giving rate, selectivity) and BU has its stronger points (graduation rates, peer rating). That said BU has been hovering around 55 for years now while Northeastern has been improving, which I think is noteworthy.

Specifically Northeastern’s GPA has now been higher than BU’s for a few years.

(25%-75%)
NU: 1270-1430
BU: 1180-1370
