Drexel worth the price?

My daughter got about 29K aid ($19K & another 10K) per year for Liberal Arts program (pre-med leaning) at Drexel. Is it worth it? She hasn't heard from anybody else else yet. We are from California.

Wait till you know all her options, see how much each one will cost you, what each has to offer, how much can you afford, etc., and decide based on that.

Since she is leaning towards pre-med, have her call the university to ask about how that is handled at Drexel. My son is a senior in high school and considering law school. He’s looked that issue up and was especially impressed with schools that have dedicated pre-law and pre-med offices to help students prepare for the application process.

I may be mistaken but I believe Drexel is a co-op school. She could gain valuable experience and knowledge through a co-op program. A good place to start might be to call the coop directly and speak to them about it.

Best of luck!

Has D visited the school?

I agree with nngmm, but add campus feel (or lack therof) to the list.
I’d wait for all offers and schedule a few key visits before deciding.

We’ve had quite a few grads from my HS go to Drexel…so feel free to PM me…

Most of them loved their time there. I know of someone in BioMed Eng and Aerospace Eng. The one in BioMed got their BS and MS in 5 years(they did a co-op too, but had quite a few AP credits) and got accepted to medical school no problem

the one in Aerospace got an internship at, I think, Boeing and has already been offered a job there(senior in college)

I will say it’s in a VERY crappy area of Philly, and is an ugly campus

Drexel has made a lot of improvements to the campus, and it is right next to Penn, so check out all the debates on the safety of the area with respect to Penn. Drexel is worse, in my opinion. I think Drexel is the right place for some students, but the campus “feel” is lacking compared to many other places, so if that is important to you, keep that in mind. As I said, it HAS improved- with more green space and more student activity buildings and areas. My niece ruled it out due to cost and campus feel. The co-op program is a draw for some. There are a number of commuting students.

Drexel is academically and socially “ok”. It is mostly a local urban mid-Atlantic school, and I doubt that many Californians attend. Drexel lies in the shadow of Penn. If there’s a family/social reason for your D to attend a college in the Philadelphia area then it may do.

If your question is based on academics, my sense is that any of the UCs and some of the California State universities are academically stronger than Drexel.

Career-wise, if your D does not complete her pre-med and eventually returns to get a job in California, Drexel would have a definite lack of name recognition to California employers. I think also that it would not have strong name recognition in applications to med schools.
