Drinking...

"Basically if you're mature and you know your limits, i see no reason not to have a bit of fun and get drunk every once in a while."

i agree 100%. hell i was a little buzzed earlier tonight.

loslobos71: Don't worry mate, I won't start anti-drinking campaign at BU. Besides, it's a lot easier to make radical statements online, hidden behind the security of a screen name. And I'm don't think of people who drink as "idiots/alcoholics", just people who make bad choices...

i hate the taste of alochol

You have personally tried every type of beer, wine and liquor?

Wow, some people (on both sides of the arguement) are pulling out the weirdest arguements.

coot, you'll probably encounter people making bad choices regardless. It's life--it's college. The #1 time in our lives for experimentation.

i don't eat fast food either. i think its gross... even though i like french fries, i don't eat them because they are unhealthy.

so what if i don't like alochol. Do you really have a problem with me saying that i dont like the taste ? that's my decision and my choice if i choose not to drink. i have friends who get smashed every weekend, and i still love them for who they are. I'm sad that they choose to drink, but i don't get in their faces and berate them for drinking. i'm not accusing anyone of anything, i'm just saying that's my reason for not drinking.

Pretty much my entire graduating class (myself included) drinks. Actually almost every high schooler I know drinks, with the exception of some in my church youth group.

The drinking laws are way too restrictive in this country. First of all, people under 21 should not get DUI's for blowing a .02 or .04. No one is wasted after such a trivial amount of alcohol. I think that if a teenager gets pulled over for something (say speeding), and blows a .04 or so, they should get charged with underage drinking and whatever traffic infraction they committed. DUI's can ruin kids lives, get them kicked out of college, just screw them over. Underage drinking tickets are still a pain but not nearly as severe. There is no use destroying a high schooler's future for something that someone over 21 wouldn't even be punished for.

That said, if a kid is pulled over and blows a .08 or higher, then throw the book at them.

Drinking and driving does not need to be a big issue. 21+ year olds do it LEGALLY all the time. As long as you aren't drunk, obey the speed limits, stop at traffic lights and come to a complete stop at stop signs, and generally drive as if you had an armed bomb in the back that would go off if you committed a traffic infraction, then you will be fine. High schoolers drink and drive all the time here, and I can't remember the last time there was even a minor drinking-related accident.

On the other hand, people get into trouble when they decide to either drive home hammered or try to show off. I have seen too many cases on the news where kids in the city an hour away from me decide to drink and then hit the interstate and push their cars to 100+ MPH. Usually they die. If they don't, they kill their friends or an innocent person. To me, their logic is flawed. If you are committing a crime in which your entire future can be thrown away if you are pulled over for the slightest violation, why push the limits? Why speed? If you don't crash, you will get pulled over, handcuffed, and booked at the jail for a DUI. Either way your life is over. I'm not sure if these people drive this way out of ignorance, intoxication, or a combination of the two.

I believe that the drinking age should be lowered to 19, I say this because the majority of people have graduated from high school by this time and are legally independent, even though most of us still rely on our parents for help with college after.

I mean damn, if I'm old enough to get drafted to die for my country, I think I'm old enough to have a drink.

Personally, I choose not to drink or do drugs, but not because I want to keep up a respectable image or I don't respect people who do. I don't really view alcohol as "safe" or "not safe." A lot of people view alcohol as an acceptable substance, but that perspective is mostly based in tradition and familiarity. It's still a drug, and, even though I don't care about what the police or my drunk friends say, I'd prefer not to alter my mind. It's pretty hard living life already.

No one has a problem with that, it just doesnt seem like you realize that the many types of alcohol have varying types of tastes. A person cannot drink a beer or something, not like it, and conclude they dont like alcohol, just the same that a person cant eat a turkey sandwich not like it and decide they hate all types of sandwiches. catch what i'm saying?

and mind you i barely barely drink im just trying to make a point, i have no problem with your choice as most people i know dont drink much if at all.

A lot of people drink, and of course a lot do not. I am the former, however, I do it sparingly, in fact I lost a ton of weight from not doing it.

When it comes to drinking, there are several types of people that **** me off.

Those who "act" drunk, when they are actually not. If you drink, you'll know what I mean in terms of how much liquor is required to have any effect.

Those who cannot hold liquor. This is probably the biggest one. I hate it when these stupid High Schoolers try to impress everyone by drinking more than they should, and throw up all over the place. Some idiot at my school did that, and we all made fun of him after.

Extremists. Those who TOTALLY oppose drinking, and must make it known. A friend of mine is always on my ass about drinking, I tell him that I do it sparingly, and in moderation, yet he insists that I am evil. Seriously, if you don't like it, then go ahead and tell your friend that you don't, but don't jump to conclusions about how its going to ruin their lives, because in my case, it won't.

my friend died in a crash last week while she was a little buzzed. she wasn't drunk, but was too drunk to drive. drinking(even one shot) and driving shouldn't happen, ever...

ha. i do not drink, nor will i till im 21. but i guess its not that surprising because im only 14. haha. well i think its good that most of you guys are dry...you should stay that way. i think that drinking is a way of forgetting your troubles and people use it to block out the world...and they tend to have more problems then most people. and it shows laziness...well thats just my opinion.

give them a break, they're still trying to learn what they can handle, and their bodies are naturally letting them know when they've had enough. We should be encouraging these kids to continue having alcohol, not discouraging them by ridiculing their developing drinking skills.

Remember, nobody likes a quitter.

Well that is fine, but if you are going to outlaw drinking and driving, you should outlaw it for everyone-including the over 21 crowd. And I'm sorry to hear about your friend...

Alcohol is a way for many "smart and respectable" high school students to let off some steam.. it doesn't mean that you should be looking down on them.

If you want to make friends, it's generally not a good idea to see them in 'black and white' terms!

I personally think that it isn't the alcohol that makes the person bad.. it is the person who makes the alcohol bad... but if someone chooses to drink too much.. just hope that person doesn't do something really stupid that he or she is going to regret in the long run!

However, I would say that there are many under the age of 21 who are able to be smart about drinking and it simply becomes a hobby.. an illegal hobby.. but a hobby.

yeah, i get you.

i have actually taken a sip of red wine and i've smelled beer. just smelling it made me not want to drink it...

A large percentage of women don't like the taste of beer, and if they say they do they might just be trying to act like a hardcore partier (i.e. my ex). Personally I really don't find it all that great either. If I have a choice I'll take shots or a mixed drink over it any day of the week. The only time I really drink beer is if its the only alcohol available or if I'm already buzzing and just want to keep it going without overdoing it.

i swear i'm the only one who actually likes cheap warm beer

ah well i guess that's a good thing

I've had 5 or 6 kinds of beer and it all tastes like shiet to me. I really dislike it. Mixed drinks, liquor, etc. i'm all fine with. I understand people not liking the taste of beer. It's equal if not worse than coffee.
