Driver's test

I am taking the driver's test tomorrow. We've really held off on doing it, but my 17th birthday is soon and we want to have my license for ease of transport.

What are some tips for those who have taken it already? I know there may be variances by state, but can you please help me out a bit? Did you fail your first time?? Do most people fail it the first time

Yeah, and then I never took it again. I turned 18 on March 5 and I don’t plan on trying it again until after college. I’m an awful driver…whenever driving comes up on here I always have to mention the time I got pulled over for a DUI even though I was sober.

If you know someone who’s taken the test already, ask them to show you the general route. Each DMV has around two routes it uses to test prospective drivers, and if you have an idea of where you’re going then it’ll be a lot easier.

Make sure you have all your documentation on the day of and arrive early. During the test, try to exaggerate your movements (eg: when you turn your head to look both ways, don’t just glance in both directions, actually swivel your head) so that the instructor knows you know the procedures. Be calm and don’t make any jerky movements with your brakes, steering wheel, etc. If possible, try to schedule your test sometime in the late morning as there are relatively few cars on the road since everyone is either at school or work. It’ll be a lot easier to change lanes and everything.

I think you’re allowed to make 16 ‘minor’ errors but any more than that or a critical error and you won’t pass. But 16 of them gives you ample wiggle room, so just focus on the road if you notice your instructor marking things down on the grading sheet. And don’t worry if you don’t pass the first time around! I didn’t, haha. In fact, I failed coming out of the parking lot because I had to make a left turn and didn’t fully brake for an incoming car. I was about to, but the instructor said “wait” and instructor intervention is a critical error, so we had to go back to the DMV…

Best of luck! I was pretty lazy on getting my license, but now that I’ve been driving for about a year, I have to say that it’s really an awesome perk. Hope you do great!

Thanks for the responses. I’m not too worried about it, but our DMV is like 15-20 minutes away and its sort of a pain to get to, I don’t want to have to go back too many times…

Well, I barely passed! Thanks for the tips, got a 72, needed 70
