Driving test tips

Hey...

Quite a few driving-related threads so I figured i'd start one too ;o). I'm scheduled for my driving test next week... I'd appreciate it if you guys coud list some do's and don'ts for the driving test?

Thanks much

CRASH THE CAR AND KILL ALL THOSE STUPID PEDESTRIANS! Drive safe.

ok biggest piece of advice on my part, come to a complete stop at the stop sign, I failed my first test because of this.
second don't get nervous, you're probably feeling confident right now but as soon as it comes time for the test you'll start getting nervous just take it slow and easy.
last remember you can retake it....and when you pass it, celebrate, i know i did, lol.

Am already nervous.. Problem is that if I fail it, then getting the next date will be hard because of the backlog in the DMV's throughout the state. :(

Could you brief me on what you had to do for your tests? Any K-turns? If so, did he make you turn into a driveway, then back out and then pull forward onto the road?

k-turn what the heck is that...

florida is a bit different, the dmv has a track just for driving test, mine consisted of making a left turn, braking fast, reverse, straightfoward, stop sign , right turn, 3point turn, stop sign, park, reverse, speed up, read road sign, exit course.

Thats interesting... Don't have all that here in CT

K-Turn = 3 point turn.

Stop behind the line at lights and stop signs. I only got 3 points off (max. 15 subtracted points to pass) but they all for the same over-the-line error.

What are the things that would result in an immediate FAIL?

Hitting the curb when parallel parking :/

I see.. When parking on a hill, how must one position the wheels? Towards the curb?

Damn.. I'm freaking out already..

Huh...y'know, I have no idea.

The person testing me (affectionately named "Failing Gail") had me parallel park on a busy street in front of a drive way, and someone was trying to pull in while I was parking, so she just kind of said "Whatever, pull out." The Gods of Driving were smiling upon me that day.

immediate fail in CA - hitting anything, tester intervention, doing something incredibly dumb like going the wrong way on a one-way street, etc.

jai6638 - which state do you live in?

For us, you fail immediately if you drive by a stop sign. When the tester gets into your car, there's a stop sign right in front of you, but they want you to start going and then stop at the stop sign 1 foot ahead of you anyway.

when parking uphill just remember "UP UP AND AWAY" (front wheels facing away from the curb. and for downhill parking: "DOWN DOWN TO THE GROUND" (front wheels facing towards the curb)

immediate fail in illinois is hitting the curb when parallel parking, rolling through a stop sign (not coming to a complete stop), and excess speeding (like more than 3 over the speed limit).

DO:
1. relax and know that you can pass
2. if you make a minor mistake, just forget about it - don't let it ruin the rest of your test

DON'T:
1. show up 15 minutes before the place closes because then you'll get the reallly pi$$ed off tester who wants nothing more than to fail you so the test will be over sooner (i had this really angry guy test me because i walked in as he was about to leave. he must have checked his watch ever 10 seconds)
2. don't yell at other drivers (my friend failed for telling a lady to go screw herself when she cut him off - the tester didn't like that and failed him because my friend was "a danger to other drivers")

Hey.. I live in Connecticut

thanks much for your help guys :).. Any other tips that you guys can think of would be appreciated.

Thats a good one.. Will remember that. Thanks

My driver's test was only 20 minutes long.

Whatever you do, don't do incredibly stupid things like turning without looking and almost losing control of the vehicle.

yeah the tests are short.

in ny anything that's a "moving violation" is an automatic failure. stuff like running a red light/not stopping at a stop sign, not being cognizant of your turning lane in multi-lane traffic (like turning from a lane that's not the designated turning lane OR when you're turning onto two or three lanes, you're supposed to turn into the lane closest to you... i know someone who failed because of that!) hitting the curb.

for us, the k-turn/three pt turn we weren't allowed to use anyone's driveway, so i'd advise you not to, since here it's an automatic failure.

my tip is just to be confident and to practice a lot. yeah, in every DMV there's a notoriously hard road tester (i had one my first time and failed), but if you're confident and have a lot of practice, you're not giving this person any real reason to fail you. drive with both hands on the wheel, check your blind spot when needed, try and drive as smoothly as possible -- if you make the examiner feel comfortable in your car from the beginning you're good. and remember, when you're asked to do thinks like parallel parking or three pt turns, you don't have to be super speedy

I had a question.. If i'm turning left ( there is only one lane that turns left )onto a two lane road, can I directly move the right lane of that road or do I need to get onto the left lane first and then move to the right lane?

Left turn - left lane. It doesn't matter that there is only one road turning left. Turn to the left lane. Then the tester, if necessary, will say, "when safe, make a right lane change."

pretend to scan teh area by exaggerating your head motions. Check your blindspots when merging, also don't slow down. if you're a female, flirt with the instructor if he's a guy.
