I am thinking of dropping a class this last trimester. It is an AP course but I don’t think we are really learning anything, and most people have dropped it already for the same reason, leaving three students. After taking it for two trimesters I get credit for the class as Honors. However, I do not know what Cornell’s policy is for dropping a class, and I can’t seem to find it online. I don’t know if I should notify admissions before or after, or how to do so.
You do not need to notify admissions. I assume you have already been admitted (ED) and sent your deposit?
You (your school) will only need to send your final transcript to Cornell upon graduation.
As this is an AP class, check the Cornell/School acceptance on taking the AP credit for this course, if in fact you will receive Cornell credit/Exempt from the class by taking the Exam and doing well, you may want to consider sticking it out for the remainder of the year. It is always nice to have those AP credits in your pocket.
Yes, you do need to notify adcom if you change your course load. They want to make sure you do not drop all of your AP and honor courses as soon as you are admitted. This came straight from my kid’s GC.
My older daughter asked her GC if she could drop some of her APs after her transcript was sent to her RD schools. Her GC said all of her RD schools would need to be notified for any schedule change. My younger daughter was admitted ED. She was told she had to keep her original schedule or Cornell would be notified.
@oldfort Our HS wants to make sure that students do not drop AP classes after college acceptances and requires both the students and parents to sign contracts that they will finish the courses and sit for the AP exams. Once the students are accepted at Cornell, it is assumed by the ADCOM that they will continue and finish with the same rigor that got them accepted. That be said, dropping one AP class will not have any effect on the students acceptance.
For many schools that is the policy for all AP classes, whether the student is a senior or not. Other schools also take away the weighting if you don’t take the AP exam. But, all that is unrelated to college admissions.
