I am a high school sophomore and just dropped AP European history. I made this decision because of the time comintement and not feeling I would have enough time to finish the reading assignments because of the sport I joined this year.
Freshmen year I took honors English and biology and did well in both classes. This year, after dropping APUSH, I’m taking honors English 2 and honors Chem. Overall, what I’m concerned about is how important that AP class was. People I’ve talked to have seemed to think that an AP class is vital, and if I needed to drop a class I should have dropped one of my honors classes. I considered this, but because an advanced history class was new to my schedule, it made sense to me to drop that class.
It’s too late to go back to APUSH, but I’d like to know how important AP classes are in regard to honors? Will colleges be significantly less impressed with only honors classes? Thank you.
I would also like to mention attending an Ivy League or any other extremely challenging school is not my end goal, although I’d like to attend a more challenging school.
I think you’ll be good. You are seeking a quality institution of higher learning so with a strong GPA and SAT/ACT scores you’ll be well positioned. As you read the CC message board it’s very easy to begin to feel that nothing is enough. But as you’ve pointed out, not everybody is looking for an Ivy.
The decision is made - stop worrying about it. You did what made the most sense to you, and I’m sure the important adults in your life agreed. Forget what other 15 year olds think! Focus on doing well in the classes you are taking. You have 2 more years to stock up on AP’s.
You are only a sophomore. You will be fine. There are a very large number of very good universities. You don’t have to have APs to get into a good school, and you have two more years to take a few APs.
My daughter’s A- in AP European History was the most difficult A- that I have ever seen in my life. The reading assignments were indeed quite daunting. IMHO it was not worth the effort.
