Dropping AP Computer Science Mid-Year?

I am currently a junior in high school with a 4.0 unweighted GPA, and I am currently taking AP Computer Science online with Florida Virtual School since my high school did not offer it in the building. I was keeping a high A in the class until recently, where the A has dropped to a 91% instead of a 97%. I am having such a hard time understanding the material and just am miserable in the course. Would dropping the course at the break in semester effect my transcript/college admission chances?

Why would you drop out? It’s not a 15 week course. You have a full year!!

Yes it is a full year course, but as I stated above, I am miserable in the course. It has gotten to a point where I cannot understand the material and I know that if I continue on my grade will drop lower than it has already.

It’s not required for graduation and it’s not required for college admission. Drop it if it makes you miserable. You are not under any obligation to complete a year long course or take the AP exam.

if you can get help outside of class, don’t drop it. apcs is like learning a new language and for me, having someone explain the concepts i couldn’t grasp in person makes all the difference. I’m not sure if it would look bad to drop the class, but it does look good to have an ap academic elective

As stated with the above, I agree. I took the course last year, and was miserable! It was my teacher’s first year teaching and it was a struggle for everyone. If you can get the help, then its worth it. I would discuss this with a guidance counselor as well.

As a junior, if your schedule is otherwise up to snuff, you can probably safely drop it. That said, I do think it’s a good thing to know the basics of. Is there no one in real life who could help you?

Talk to your counselor.
