Dropping AP course in 3rd quarter in HS

My daughter who is a Junior in HS in VA, is a A/B Grade student with 4.0 GPA. In her AP Biology course she has a C+ in first 2 quarters and now a D so far in the 3rd quarter. She wants to drop the course now. How bad this will reflect in her clean Transcript and how much will it ruin her college admission? which is better? dropping the course now or let her finish it with a C/D?

I just want to say that I totally understand her position because I’m in AP Biology as well and went from a B+ first semester to an F currently and only 3 months to bring it up. I won’t be much help in how much it will effect admission, but here’s some pros and cons:

If she drops the course it may reflect badly on her transcripts. It will seem as if she gave up on something she found challenging and didn’t try to conquer it. A lot of classes in college are going to be difficult, but she can’t just drop them.

AP Biology is known as a hard course at any school and just the fact that she took it is good. And there are only 3 months left of school, I think she should hang in there. She should keep trying her best and push through the class. I would advise getting a review book for the AP exam and study these next few months for a 4. Maybe even discuss the possibility of boosting her grade if she passes the AP exam and has a low grade in the class with the teacher; I doubt the teacher would give her an A, but quite possibly a B or high C. It couldn’t hurt to try. Also reviewing for the exam might be easier for her than the class- some teachers just can’t teach AP and sometimes the class is just plain difficult.
And if she doesn’t do well in the class, at least she’s prepared for college level Biology and it will be more of a review for her.

Good luck in whatever she decides to do.
