Dropping out of UCSC to CC in order to transfer to a different UC using TAG

I'm a current first year student at UCSC. However, I now want to transfer to UCSB for important personal reasons. Is it possible for me to leave UCSC and go to a CC for my sophomore year (2012-2013) in order to apply using TAG at UCSB for Fall 2013, or is this not possible at all? I am unsure whether I need the 30 units required from a CC before applying or not , but I plan on completing the 30 semester units from a CC during my sophomore year by Spring 2013. I will also have 39 transferable UC credits from UCSC.

I think you can’t have more than 20 units from a four year to qualify for a tag but I am not 100% positive.

“Applicants must have completed 30 semester UC transferable units (excluding AP/IB units) prior to TAG submission and complete the last 30 of 60 semester or more UC-transferable units in residence at a California community college.”

I know it’s kind of vague, but from the wording I think it’s safe to assume you have to have 30 UC transferable units by the end of Fall and the last 30 completed at a CCC by the end of Spring.

It sounds like what you want is possible. You might want to consider attending SBCC for a couple of reasons. The primary one is that if you want the UCSB experience and environs, you could live in Isla Vista right among the regular UCSB students and take part in the life and setting of UCSB. I have more about this in my post at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-santa-barbara/468098-backdoor-way-get-into-ucsb.html</a> Many UCSB students move into Isla Vista after their first year, so the students around you will be sophomores on up. In fact unless you tell them, most of your neighbors will think you are a UCSB student and they just haven’t had a class with you.

Another reason is that SBCC is the big CC feeder to UCSB, because a number of its students are doing the same thing; living away from home while attending SBCC and intending to xfer. And after 1 semester at SBCC you can even enroll in a class per semester at UCSB.

As a local student it would be much easier for you to stop by UCSB to get any questions about xfer answered, and the people at SBCC should be very knowledgeable as well.

You can qualify for TAG provided that you “do not exceed 90 semester units of combined 4-year and community college coursework, excluding AP/IB credits (unit limit does not apply to College of Engineering and Creative Studies).” Source: http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/counselors/files/CC11_TAGMatrix_final.pdf</a>, page 2.

Also, If I were you I would not expect being able to transfer after 1 year a community college. A new student has the lowest priority for registration and it’s highly likely you won’t be able to get the classes you want. I switched from 1 CC to another and I’m stuck here for another year since I simply could not get any classes. I’m forced to take 2 history and 2 philosphy classes this semester. -.-
