I am currently a freshman at the University of Redlands. I like it here a lot but I am starting to question why I am paying so much money to attend this school when I could go to a CC and then end up at a much better UC such as Santa Barbara. If I went to a CC next year would I have the same likelihood of gaining admission to a UCSB as if I had originally went to one, or would it be different because I spent freshman year at a 4-year school?

In one aspect, perhaps different. Had you just gone to a CC then at the start of your 2nd year you definitely could have filed a TAG application, which would give you guaranteed admission to UCSB provided you met all the TAG requirements.

I’m not an adcom, but if you look at the TAG matrix at <a href=“University of California Counselors”>University of California Counselors; there is something that is not clear (at least to me).
Here is what is not clear to me; does this apply to filing a TAG or just at the end of your CCC career? There is a big difference to you in this point. You will probably have 30 units at the end of the year at Redlands, and can meet this definition of CCC xfer student after a year at your CCC. If you can file a TAG you are promised admission.

If you need the 30 units to file a TAG, there is a slim possibility you could still do this if you left Redlands after this semester and took enough units in the Spring semester and during the summer. BTW if you are thinking of this then look carefully into TAG to make sure you can meet all of the requirements. To investigate further I’d suggest contacting UCSB admissions, doing so in email/writing so you have a record of what they told you.

If your question is with respect to the ordinary admission process and not TAG, I don’t know the answer.
