Dropping out to Transfer

I'm transferring. It's no longer a question of if, but when. Here's my question. Would it affect my applications to drop out of my current school and spend the fall of next year focusing on applications and getting a part time job? I ask because I go to a very expensive private school, and I'm questioning whether or not it's fair to ask my parents to pay for another semester of it when I'm not enjoying it or really getting anything out of it. I'd think about taking some community college classes just to get some credits done, but ultimately I want to know if it would effect my applications if I left my current school and basically took a semester off before going back to school somewhere else.

Yes this would certainly affect many aspects of the transfer process. Unfortunately being out of school may hamper the strength of your application. Colleges will want to know why you left school, so there would be some necessary explaining. Obviously this isn’t the end of the world because students take time off from school for many reasons. Be sure that whatever decision you make is in your best interest, there is no point in spending tens of thousands of dollars on anything you dislike.

My story is a bit complicated by the fact that I’m transferring because of my health, but I’m taking this semester off–technically on leave from my college–in order to build up my strength and transfer. Although our situations are certainly different, I’ll know where I get in sometime the middle of may and would be happy to let you know how it worked out for me (of course if I don’t get into my top schools the reason may have nothing to do with taking the semester off).

Good luck with everything!!!

I’m in the same boat as you-- I want to take a semester off because I don’t want my parents to pay a huge amount of money for a semester I don’t even enjoy, but since that will probably be the fall semester, I feel like that would affect my transfer chances, but I don’t know

I don’t think it would affect your transfer process that much as long as you did something productive like work. People transfer for many reasons and paying a lot for a school that isn’t right for you is a reasonable one.

I do have one concern, not all schools accept spring transfers, and some may accept fewer at that time. You need to check college websites for the schools you’re interested in.
