What exactly does the process of drown proofing consist of? I’ve read there are a couple different ways that it is done (according to where and what branch). But how is it done at the AFA?

Just take a deep breath, lean forward, and stick your head underwater for as long as possible. When you run out of air, stick your head up, take a breath, and go back under.

Depending on how buoyant you are, you might be able to stay afloat by keeping your arms outstretched in front of you. If not, slow leg movements will keep you above the surface, but the idea is to minimize your movement and save as much energy as possible if you know you'll be stranded for a while.
