Drowning in my AP US grade

Hi, thank you for taking your time to read this.

I am a student that works hard and have been getting very good grades.

For the best three tests in AP US, I have been getting grades in the low 60s. It pains me to see them and it hurts to know students in the grade below me are doing better than me. (It's just I'm a year wiser, that's all.)

I study by making flashcards, the information really clings on to my mind. The tests are multiple choice.

Please give me some advice. What am I doing wrong? Thank you so much.

I took APUSH last year. If your class is reading the American Pageant textbook, then go to this website: http://wikinotes.wikidot.com/

The outlines flows with the book and helped me on the tests!!

I’m not a big fan with flashcards. limited information. too much memorizing. terms/definitions. I just prefer a more comprehensive approach.

Wait, are you using Barron’s flash cards by any chance?

Thanks so much for replying! I make flashcards out of my teacher’s notes based on the 13th edition of the American Pageant.

How specifically did you study for the test and how much time did you dedicate to it?

So far I’ve studied for about 3 hours a day for 3 days (plus weekends) and it wasn’t effective.

Hey. Although I have not taken APUSH, I am currently taking AP Gov. I know there’s a difference between the two courses but history is history. In my opinion, history courses require a general schematic events but the minute details fall into line after you memorize them. What is your class currently learning and can you provide an example of a possible test question?
Do not worry or panic. You need to adapt to this course that is foreign to you. You will eventually learn how to tackle APUSH. Good luck!

@peachie1232‌ I’m not in your class so I don’t know how your tests are like. haha

But if your teacher is anything like mine, the test is basically AP-styled and occasionally has questions that regurgitate information from the textbook(which is why the outlines were helpful  ). If you’re talking about the AP test in May, then Princeton’s review is really helpful. However, I didn’t use the Princeton review to study for the my teacher’s tests because his test were way more specific. (I learned that the hard way haha.)

But I’m not stopping you from using flashcards or anything like that. If you like using them to study that’s perfectly acceptable. But try experimenting with other methods of studying to find the one that’s best for you.

Also, I studied for like the weekends before the actual test. If not, then I started studying 2-3 days prior to the tests.

However, there were some kids in my class that never studied but actually knew history, so they got like 100s.

Yeah, I agree @aznguy97‌ history comes easy to some people! Thank you for your replies! :)

@GummyJenny‌ Thank you for the encouragement I feel so much better.

AP United States History is usually one of the top three hardest AP’s ever made. Not many people make an A in this class and all I ever see is people making bad grades. My school offers it and I’m not taking it because it doesn’t interest me. Although it would be nice to get the history credit out of the way, I don’t really care for it.

This class should interest you and the people who do the best are the one’s who are truly excited about history. I hope you didn’t take this class just for an A, if you did talk to your guidance counselor if it’s not too late in the year for someone if your school to drop a class. You’d be better off taking an honors class if you feel this is not working. Did you take AP Global last year?

I’m in it too and I’m in the 75s-85s range. We have a test once we get back from break and I found that outlines and videos from YouTube helped me a lot. It took a while to get used to but I know for sure that after we all get used to the testing style (its much different), we will do better.

I also found that this website helps a lot.

LMK what book you use, maybe I can get you something even better.
