Drum Major or Summer Camp?

Hi, I am a junior in high school. I am wondering whether, this summer, I should apply to a competitive summer program like the one at MIT for girls going to engineering, or try out for drum major for my high school marching band.

I'm afraid that if I try out for drum major, my whole summer will be dominated by band, and I won't be able to have those sparkles on my college apps that I attended such and such program that only accepts x number of students that apply. However, I believe that being drum major in my band that has consecutively won Northeastern marching band competitions will show that I am a leader and dedicated to something not necessarily academic.

If I apply to a competitive summer program and get in, however, I will still be a section leader in the band--not quite as eye-catching as drum major, but still a leadership position.

I am taking my SAT's on Oct. and anticipate a 2200-2400 score range. I am either number 1 or 2 in my class of 530, Asian female aiming for an Ivy. What should I do?

I too would find a decision like that very difficult. Could you apply to the summer program now, then audition for dm when the time comes, then decline the acceptance to the summer program if you get drum major and decide that you’d rather do that? That would at least put off deciding for a couple months.
