I was just curious if anyone had any information about auditioning for the Drumline? How many freshman usually make the line? How difficult is the audition process? Anything at all would be appreciated.

anyone have any info???

Hi! I was in the band but didn’t play percussion, so I don’t have specific drumline information, but I can give you some general marching band audition information. If you audition you will move in about a week early. There is a week of band camp, where you will learn the school songs, a marching routine, and for drumline I’m sure you’ll learn cadences.

You will do a playing audition on your own, just you and one of the directors, and then you will do your marching audition as part of a small group. You are also informally evaluated through the band camp week - the core band members (usually juniors and seniors) will look at your attitude, willingness to learn, skills, etc throughout the whole week.

I am not sure on specific numbers of how many they accept each year (it varies by instrument), but I definitely encourage you to try out, and if you don’t make it as a freshman come back and audition as a sophomore! If you don’t make marching band you can still play in varsity band (basketball/hockey) - I definitely recommend doing that so you can stay involved and get to know some of the people. I didn’t make marching band my freshman year but did make it as a sophomore, and it was one of the best experiences of college for me.
