Dartmouth News - Dartmouth reports 9 percent increase in admissions applications - 01/23/09

Oh my god.

YAY FOR SMITH AND MOUNT HOLYOKE! Heh. :|

-dropped dead-

Yay for... SUNY Binghamton and SUNY Geneseo...?
Gahhhhhh

Chandler, my DD did not get into her dream school, went to Bing, transferred to dream school. See it as just a bump in the road.

i wonder if they will still only admit roughly 10% of deferees even if the number deferred has dropped from ~550 to 140...

hmom, yeah I've heard that that's what a lot of people end up doing, but I'd really like to get into at least one of my semi-dream schools and have four cohesive years of undergraduate education.
Bing is a great school, though, so I wouldn't be devastated if I went there. I'd just rather go to Dartmouth :P
The big dream school(s) for me are Williams and Yale, though.

how come everywhere but penn sees decreases

It would be awesome if Penn's admit rate didn't decrease.. maybe I'd have a prayer over there.

yupiee it's increased :)

Penn has been having problems with crime/safety on and around campus. It's been a big problem. Also, Wharton and business schools in general have not been as popular lately...

An alum/friend told me that she went back to Penn recently (she graduated 2 years ago) and she wouldn't dare go to some of the places she used to hang out. West PA is not the place to be right now...

Ironically, Columbia/Harlem has been getting better and better. The area has really gentrified. (Which has been happening with all of Manhattan in general).

Actually, violent crime and the murder rate all decreased by a huge margin this year. Violent crime down 38 percent | Interactive graph - News

Phila. murders drop, but decline is short of goal - News

Our ED numbers dropped insignificantly, but that doesn't mean we won't generate record applicants for RD. Only time will tell ;)

But I find it unlikely that the acceptance rate will actually INCREASE.

Wow. Last year Dartmouth's yield was 50%, but they're projecting 60% this year? Why?!

Where did you see 60%?

and so, to wrap this all up, is there any conclusive correllation we can draw between admission rates and crime statistics?

No. Last year Dartmouth's yield was 50%, including ED. This year: projected to be the same. When the dust clears, they will have admitted 2,200 students to enroll 1,100. Dartmouth's RD yield is about 39%.

Actually in recent years the yield has been between 51-53%, with about 41-42% RD. D admits the lowest percentage of its class ED among the Ivies.

i could see Wharton taking a hit and dragging the College down with it...but only time will tell..
