Hey guys,
so I was applying to UPenn and I noticed this Dual Degree option with the exact 2 things that I have a high interest in. Would selecting it instead of CAS or SEAS put me in a small selective pool of applicants? Would it decrease my chances of getting in? Any information on this program would be appreciated (the website doesn't tell much.)

Penn’s specialized Dual Degree programs are very selective, but there’s no reason not to go for it. When you apply, you can indicate that you would like to still be considered for one of Penn’s other schools (like CAS) if you don’t get into the program. At least, you could for ED; I’m almost 100% sure you can for RD too.

I don’t know anything about the program, but I do know that you can still dual-degree if you don’t get into the program but do get into Penn. It requires a good GPA and completing a transfer at the end of your freshman year, but I’ve seen multiple people say that it’s very doable. Furthermore, a lot of people seem to have success getting two degrees in a 4 year period. The programs like the one you mentioned just make it a little easier and more specialized… probably with some great perks too.

That’s the thing. Every other dual-degree or accelerated program has a special section in the UPen supplement application, with its own essay and a 2nd choice in case you’re not admitted into the program. The Dual Degree for comp and cogn sci, however, doesn’t have that. Its under its own section “Dual Degree Program: Computer and Cognitive Science” in the dropdown menu of Major choice (all other programs are under “Co-ordinated Dual Degree or Accelerated Programs”). So I’m kinda confused…

But thanks for your help! I sent them an email and hopefully they’ll reply soon. If anyone has some extra information, please share it. :)

Oh, I have no idea then, but if it’s in the “Majors” drop-down, then it’s probably something you apply for/work towards upon acceptance into a single school. Like I said, though, no idea. I can only speculate.
