Dual Degree

Hi, MT, I think you have this all straightened out by now, but I just wanted to clarifly/support KatMT’s comment above, since our family has been through this specific instance and families need to know this about UMich in advance/as early as possible:

When applying to UMich, you can select SOMTD alone, or apply to another school such as LSA or ENG in ADDITION on the same application.

Whether you apply ONLY to the SOMTD or to two UMich schools, you will not get an audition until you have “academic clearance.” However, academic clearance for the SOMTD is NOT the equivalent of acceptance to LSA/or Eng or any other UMich school. In fact, the criterial/scores et al are quite a bit lower.

If you ONLY applied to SOMTD and are not successful, you are NOT admitted to LSA, and frankly, will be too late to be a “likely” candidate to successfully apply (eg. in March, when audition results come out) for fall that year, because those who have not applied by Feb. 1 do not receive “equal consideration.”

If you have applied to both programs, it is entirely possible that you will be accepted to one but not the other, and that there will not necessarily be any unity in terms of time frame in learning which you’re admitted to. Eg. you may get an early offer from SOMTD but be waitlisted for Engineering. Etc. More typically, you may be accepted to LSA early, even offered a scholarship, and still not know the outcome of your SOM audition.

If you are accepted to both programs, you may decline either, or accept both and at a later date elect to proceed with only one of the degrees.

Moral of the story is if you want to attend UMich whether you get into the school of music or not, apply to two programs and apply as early as possible. Note that BA degrees in Music are also available at LSA, but obviously are not performance degrees. Performance studios can still be accessed, preferentially to SOM non-majors, then LSA etc. You’re just not as likely to get the teacher you want, and may end up with a gsi, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

I have witnessed U of M decline a student in one SOM program and offer an audition in ANOTHER SOM program, just so you know. I have also seen them reject a candidate to whom they offered an alternate audition/program. All these things appear to be possible.

My son was offered a nice academic scholarship with a deadline very early on, months before he knew about the SOM program. We had to speak directly with admissions office to remain in integrity about the “scholarship deadline” commitment. They can and will allow you some wiggle room.

Hope that helps!
PS MT, thanks for your note. I tried to respond, but you have ccmail disabled. Good luck!
