Is it possible and is it reasonable? I love doing both and I'm great at it! :)

Are you interested in graduate or undergrad? At the undergrad level, it’s more like a double major and rarely, if ever, with a professional degree (B.Arch). I know WashU does offer a dual program in Civil and Architecture, and there are probably many others.

At the grad level, the only one I know of is at Berkeley (architecture plus structural). Of course, there might be others. It’s possible to take civil engineering classes as electives while pursuing an M.Arch but a dual degree is definitely a lot harder, if it is allowed to begin with.

More common are dual degrees in architecture and urban planning or civil engineering and urban planning…

Another option might be to get a bachelor’s in civil eng. and then go on to grad school for an M.Arch or a dual degree. Calatrava took that route before setting up his own firm.

USC offers a BS in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Building Science.

You can read more about it here: [Civil and Environmental Engineering - BSCE Building Science](http://www.usc.edu/dept/civil_eng/dept/admission/undergraduate/bldgscience.htm)

Thank you both, I’ll look into it further soon. :)

I imagine it would be tough, but I’m sure you can pull it off with enough dedication and luck. You might not end up with a 4.0 and extracurriculars, but… such an impressive double major will be its own reward.

Not practical. It’s tough to get a B.Arch in the standard 5 years alone and it’s tough to get a B.S. in engineering in 4 years alone. There are almost no overlapping courses in the two programs (which are usually housed in two different schools).

What would be a better idea (and a more common route) is to get a B.S. in Civil Engineering and then go get a M.Arch afterwards.

I want to major in them, like a PhD since I don’t want a just a job after I’m done college. I want to develop and contribute to the field. :)

Thank you both for your input. I’ll ask around, especially with college advisers and see what happens.

You want two professional degrees AND PhD’s in them? Sounds very ambitious! haha, you’ll be in school for your entire life. Definitely talk to some people in the civil engineering department and the architecture school. Make sure you know what you want before biting off too much.

Oh no, I was thinking about doing them at the same time. However, I don’t think the schools would accept that due to scheduling conflicts…

I’m working on a portfolio on my structural and architectural work I’ve already done, maybe that’ll impress them?

I’ve heard that architecture schools like to see “artsy” submissions unrelated to architecture. Perhaps it’s different for each school, but the arch. school at my alma mater looked for creativity first and foremost, and quite often the submissions had nothing to do with architecture. You should try asking in the architecture forum here on CC.

It really takes someone special to excel in both architecture and art, as one is a science and the other is an art. There aren’t many people like that out there.

Best of luck!

hi . i have finished my bachelor on civil engg. now am much eager to do my master on architecture . can any one guide me about this . i think M.Arch has many course , in that which one is fully design based? guide me !
