Dual enroll or AP?

Hey! I have the opportunity to dual enroll at Indian river State College and get my AA in pre-med before I graduate high school.

I’m leaning toward AP instead, which do you think will give me a better chance at UF?

Thanks!

Premed is not a major… I took dual enrollment classes during the summer and IB classes during the school year. So do both if you can, but UF doesn’t really have high requirements, thus either is fine for getting in.

@oliviawhite970 I’m from Ft. Pierce! I can only share from my kids’ experiences. My daughter’s counselors advised her to go the AP route. It was explained that universities like that AP students are required to take the AP exams that are written and scored by someone other than the teacher. With dual enrollment, there is no way for them to insure that students were taught at the same level of difficulty. One teacher may be an easy A and another very difficult. The AP exam is a more accurate way for them to determine college readiness.

In our area, the AP route is tougher as well.

Thank You so much! I’ve decided to go the AP route, but sadly, my school has been slashing the number of AP classes and has even cancelled many of the foreign language programs. At this point there are only 7 or so AP classes left!

Pre med can be a major, usually “pre meds” major in whatever as long as they fulfill course requirements for med schools.

I met with a counselor at IRSC and she set up a pre med AA plan in case I wanted to do that, so it’s a major at IRSC.

You should ask your question in the pre-med forum:

My only concern may be that med schools could prefer that you take some of our core classes at an University (like UF) and not through dual enrollment. But I’m no expert on this stuff.

Good Luck!
